Who decides nicknames for Rolex models? Because the SD43 needs a new handle.

One of the forum members on here mentioned that we should give the SD43 a better name. I personally agree. SD43 is very bland at best, and it definitely deserves a BA handle. I have no idea how these things actually get their names, but as Rolex aficionados in the forum I see no reason why we finally couldn't bless this Game changing model with a great nickname. With other famous Rolex novelties having names like Batman, President, Fat lady, and Superman GMT etc. I have to agree that the SD43 needs to have a very cool handle.

The best way I can think of to do this is everyone comes up with a name then at the end of the month based on seconds, and votes we pick a WINNER.

So far:

Vader,

The Red Bull,

and Big Red,

Are ideas I have seen. But I am sure no one is smarter than all of us, as far as coming up with a name for this new iconic model.

So get to brainstorming gentlemen! We have a Rolex to name.

Are watch nicknamers the same people who nickname their own junk? And if they are, how much can you tell about them depending on if they imagine their watch to be a superhero vs. say, a Smurf or Kermit. Is the obsession to associate adult watches with adolescent-oriented comic book superheros just another sign that more and more people aren't hitting emotional puberty until the age of 35-40? Is it linked to participation trophies and that sort of thing?

All I'm saying is, there could be studies done on this.

You're making some pretty good points but, I have to point out a couple of things. For starters I'm pretty sure since people here are participating in a watch forum, it may be safe to say on some level we could be nerds; Or at least facing some kind of mental deficiency. I mean seriously there should be a help group when we start putting together collections that rival the price of some peoples houses. Second I'm pretty sure men don't hit emotional puberty until 42 from the last study conducted, and there's always that thing about men versus boys and the price of our toys...

So largely I agree with you on all of your points. Unfortunately since it is difficult to fight biology, and many of us have no one to stage an intervention, I think I will just embrace these facts, and give my way overpriced watches stupid funny names like Seaclops, or Vader.

If one must nickname something, at least observe the time-tested criteria for coining good ones that stick..

#1) a good nickname must be clever and appropriate, organic to some attribute, characteristic, or it's given name. If #1 is satisfied, then a nickname can be improved by...

#2) being mildly derisive/at odds with it's given name. #3) In rare cases where it's not, it should coined by an enemy.

Aircraft nicknames provide plenty of examples of the above to varying degrees. For instance...

Vultee Valiant - "Vibrator" because it did. N3N Navy training aircraft. - "Yellow Peril" (because painted yellow). Beechcraft Bonanza - "V-tailed Doctor Killer".

B-26 Marauder - the "Flying Prostitute" or "The Baltimore Whore" because it had small wings/no visible means of support and where it was produced.

F-104 Starfighter - "Zipper", "Dirt Nail". F-105 Thunderchief - "Thud" (sound it made hitting the ground).

B-52 Stratofortress - "Buff" (Big Ugly Fat Fxxxer"). A-7 Corsair II - Sluf (Slow Little Ugly Fxxxer). A-10 Thunderbolt II - "Warthog", "Hog". F7U Cutlass - "Gutless Cutlass". AD-1 Skyraider - "Able Dog". T-37 - "Tweety Bird", "Dog Whistle", "Converter" (little, slow, converts fuel into noise, a high-pitched tweeting). F-111 - "Pig".

B-747 - "Whale". B-737 - "Guppy", "Maggot". Any small regional airliner - "Barbie Jet". Any Airbus - "Scare Bus". A-320 "Chainsaw", "Sully's Ark". Any Embraer aircraft - "Jungle Jet" (made in Brazil). Swearingen Metroliner - "San Antonio Sewer Pipe", "Death Pencil". B-757 - "Slave Galley".

Official Name derivatives....A3D Skywarrior - "All Three Dead". F4D Skyway - "Ford". DC-10 - "Death Cruiser Ten". F-100 Super Saber - "Hun". B-1 Lancer - "Bone".

F-14 Tomcat - "Turkey" (looks like one). A-6 Intruder - "Tadpole", "Drumstick" (looks like one). SR-71 Blackbird- "Habu" (looks like one according to Okinawans). B-2 Sprit - "Boomerang". P-47 Thunderbolt - "Jug".

Examples of #3) would be the P-38 Lightning - nicknamed "Fork-tailed Devil" by the Germans. F4U Corsair - named "Whistling Death" by the Japanese.

Then there's some nicknames that are so good they get applied, recycled, or modified to various aircraft..."Widowmaker" (self explanatory), "Lawn Dart" , "Lead Sled" (fast, but heavy and can't turn well), "Aluminum Overcast" (really big), "Double Ugly", "WISCOD" (Whistling Shit Can Of Death), "Crowd Killer", "Ensign Killer". etc. etc.

So you see, any halfway decent (let alone righteous) nickname has to involve more thought than just matching a couple colors of a watch to the costume of a comic book superhero or cartoon character.

Even the nicknames "Pepsi", "Coke", and "Root Beer" are descriptions not merely of bezel colors but the fact they were also made from thin aluminum strips as if cut from a cheap soda cans.

So, if there must be watch nicknames, have good ones. Ditch the superhero/ cartoon themes. "SeaClops" is on the right track.
