My iPhone photography is hit or miss, but I did capture the shimmering blue face. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then

It's just a watch and neither sporty or dressy IMO.

As far as Rolex watches go, I'd say it's on the dressier side. However, it is far from a true dress watch. That's what Cellini is for.

I voted dress watch, but that's kind of a lie. A true dress watch should be on the smaller side, on a lizard or crocodile leather strap, and probably made of precious metal. That said, that's a very conservative definition that almost any Datejust can more or less be customized to fit (except the case material). That said, the Datejust is a dressier watch. I wore mine with a tuxedo for my wedding.
I think Rolex still considers it a sports watch because it is in the professional line as is the Day-Date. |

It’s a Professional model and is closer to a sports model than a dress. The only dress watch Rolex makes are Cellini’s. People here refer to DJ’s and DD’s as dress watches but clearly they are not. If you want a dress watch find a nice time only watch on a leather strap.

So many variants of the DJ it's hard to pin it down. Fluted and jubilee, that's dressy no matter how hard one tries to make it sporty. Dome bezel and oyster, that's much closer to an Explorer and therefore more sporty than dressy.
I don't consider myself someone who is going to judge a person based on their watch/ outfit combination. "Hey you in the shorts and tee shirt! Take off that DJ at once and put on a Sub!" Yeah, I'm not going to do that. |

I personally feel it depends on the configuration.
Flutted bezel w. jubilee: Dress Flutted w. oyster: Sports or Dress Smooth w. jubilee: sports or dress Smooth w. Oyster: Sport Add diamonds or any gold other than white, and it's moving more toward dress. |

Yeah I would. Size, case material, leather strap; they all meet the criteria. I am not saying a steel watch or a watch over 40mm cannot be a dress watch. I think it really comes down to the case design and the presence of a strap (again preferred croc or lizard). I mean look at something like the ALS Zeitwerk. I'd call that a dress watch even though it has a complex design, is thick for Lange, and is a hair on the larger side. I think the problem with the Rolex Professional Line including the DJ and DD is that the Oyster case (while considered relatively conservative in design) is a waterproof sport design. But yes, by the criteria you gave, I'd say the DD is a dress watch (especially because of the leather strap). I do think, each reference of any brand though does need to be looked at individually.

I believe it depends so much on the dial. Champagne, silver, white, blue, black, green, etc. Sticks on black dial are sporty, Romans on champagne much less. The case is a tool-watch case, even the fluted bezel was born as something technical.

When I feel that my dj36 is too dressy with the jubilee I throw the pcl on and it becomes more casual. Wouldn’t call it sporty though. I’d say a dj2 is also casual with the ability to be dressy.

Fluted Jubilee is a dressy sports watch. Smooth Oyster is pretty much a sports watch.

Obviously not a dress watch.
This poll really just reflects if people believe there's a definition for a dress watch. If one answers "Yes", then they don't. No big deal, it's obviously a convention not a "rule", but... ...if it's all a matter of fluid subjectivity and matter of opinion that follows a line of thinking that goes something like "it seems dressier to me than some other watches, therefore it's a dress watch", then there's really no reason to bother defining subsets of anything based on their characteristics in the first place. May as well argue that a family sedan is a "sports car" or "truck" depending on how it's driven or what it's used for. Digital watches and G-shocks can be dress watches too when casting aside the definitions that convention accepts. It's sort of like oxymoronically adding/wearing individual flourishes and/or adornments outside what convention accepts as formal wear as one would to non-formal wear, since "formal" is defined as following a certain form. Wearing things that don't follow the form negates the formality of the entire package. |
