Need some info on a Datejust
Hi!
Just received a Datejust that I won at an auction. There was very little info on the watch....but I took a chance. I think it is from 1966. I have two questions: what is the model number (1601, 1603 etc) and what is the hour markers called (and are they rare in any way)? Thankful for any help! |

Looks like a nice Datejust. With the "pie-pan" dial, it is certainly a 160X series. As it sits now with the fluted bezel, it is a 1601. Not uncommon for the bezel to be swapped, so until you check the case markings, you won't know for sure. Nice riveted bracelet as well, although it's a stainless bracelet and it should be two-tone. Looks period correct for late 60's/early 70's.
Remove the bracelet and you can see model and serial numbers between the lugs. I have seen those hour markers referred to a as "coffin" hour markers. Although not super rare, they are not the common stick markers... |

The serial number indicates 1966, the bracelet is marked 67 with a 1 over so January 1967 for the bracelet I think. Couldn't see a model number between the lugs, maybe I missed it somehow. Thanks for the info!

The model number often gets VERY faint on 1601 models due to rub from the bracelet/spring bar... use a loupe or magnifying glass... it should be there... I would say it is more a problem when the serial is missing, then the model number... dial is standard for that vintage... nothing spectacular or rare...

I'd expect the bracelet to be incorrect rather than the bezel/crown/hands/batons.
Its rare(ish) to find that dial hand combo on a 1601 with white fluted bezel and s/s crown and s/s bracelet . you do get it but they tended to be from the middle east. |
