What do you guys think of the black dial OP39 released Basel 2018? It is on the Rolex website.

Re:
The white dial in 34mm or 39mm is stunning, but black in both those case sizes look fantastic as well!

I agree the oyster perpetual range on all dials is nice. I am glad they keept the square colour contrast markers three years on from original release.

Do you all still like original and current blue, rhodium and grape dials?

I'm hoping with the increased interest in the new white and black dials that some discounts can be had on the original colours. I wouldn't mind adding a grape or rhodium dial OP to my collection.

Love it. Even though I have an Explorer I will be buying the black dial. I love the simple black dial with the baton indexes. Perfect simple watch & at 39mm what else could better just a Easylink extension.

I think you can on the current models, but not on the new Basels in this market, at least not for a few months until they are sitting unsold in smaller ADs.

Personally I've never really loved the Mercedes hands and the Arabics at 3/6/9 on the Explorer so those differences alone are enough to make me interested in the OP. A further point of differentiation is that it has a sunburst black dial as opposed to the flat black on the EXP.
I'll be interested to try it on side by side versus the Rhodium version. |

I suspect if will be a staple at the ADs and readily available. It's great to finally see fully working lume on the OP39.

I think the new White and Black look great; however, I'd still prefer the Explorer.
You honestly can't go wrong with this watch anyway. Choose whichever you like best. The Explorer is sportier and this is dressier. It's just a matter of preference. |

Besides the price, not sure why anyone would choose it over the Explorer I

Sorry guys, I find it bland, dull, boring. The OP range needs some fancy colours to revitalise it IMHO.

I'm glad the OP39 finally has some proper lume but in my own humble opinion I think Rolex would have been better off updating the Blue, Red Grape and Dark Rhodium dials instead of introducing a White and Black option.

5% maybe on 36mm but I doubt you get a discount on 39. Maybe on purple 39 if they can't shift it, but the rhodium sells and takes a month or two to locate one.

I have the OP39 blue dial with green accents. I may acquire the OP39 in white. The no-nonsense OP39 provides perfect symmetry, a perfect way for seeing time as a daily continuity, without getting distracted by incidentals, such as the date, or 'tools'. It's elegant. It's slim, fits comfortably. It's semi large size, for a traditional OP, yields a dial that invites a slightly prolonged viewing, and allows the eye to wander. The simple layout reminds me of my 1940s Oyster Perpetual: all class. Imo, they've made a mistake to categorize this as an entry level watch. It should have a glide adjustment and cost a bit more to compensate.
The blue OP39 is subtle. I think it's perfect. The lume is weak, though still serviceable. 3,6,9 lume is perfect as it's all I need to establish the time in the dark, while the white gold stick markers shine brightly in sun, e.g. when I'm driving. The dial is cinematic: lush, dark, and romantic for the most part, but lit up on parts of the dial when tilted into the light. The green hour markers are not luminiscent. They're barely even visible as anything other than a slight indication in normal light, at the periphery of the dial. They help casually establish where the hour markers are. The rhodium and red grape dials looks great too, they establish different moods, and share that cinematic quality and elegance. It's a changeable dial surface which delights my mind and makes a joy of reading time. The bright red markers on the red grape lends it a more festive Latin appearance, in my mind, like hot pepper on a lush wine. It's a little hard to match everything with, but its boldness is, in itself, masculine. The rhodium is more like watching a classic black-and-white movie. I've seen the white OP34 at Tourneau. It's jaw dropping. I've not seen a photo which captures its brilliance. The subtle shades of design that went into that white surface struck me as the finest white sand I'd ever seen, powdery, and hinting at the full spectrum range of refracted color across its surface in subtle scintillating gradations. Its refinement is worthy of the brand. I like the all lume markers on this one not because I need lume for 11 hour markers, but because the white-on-white appearance lends to a subtlety in presentation. I also saw the black OP34, and my feeling is the OP39 version would have been much better with white gold for the 1,2,4,5,7,8,10,11 markers, getting back into the elegant styling which has marked the OP39 rollout. I get the sense a bit that Rolex listened to some criticisms of the grape, blue, rhodium rollout when redesigning the white and black, and perhaps over-reverted to normalcy into sports-watch land at the expense of subtle shading. It's a different concept of maturity. On the one hand confidence, gradation, and subtlety, on the other plain-spoken sobriety. |
