I thought a new colleague was a watch guy...

We just hired a new person at our firm and when I walked in the first thing I noticed was he was wearing a Kermit! I instantly said oh wow nice Kermit (not really paying attention to the watch too much). He gave me kind of a dumbfounded look like he had no idea what I was talking about. I was like wow does this new kid really have a Kermit and not know what he has?

Later on I strike up a conversation and he takes it off to show me...instantly figured out it was a fake!! Not even close!

Two things:

1. I consider myself to be a watch guy and if person I don't know said "nice kermit" to me out of the blue, I would not be thrilled. I would also have had a dumbfounded look on my face.
2. Many people including myself do not like the dumb nicknames. Pepsi and coke can get a pass, but the character names are cringe worthy and as bad as this may sound, if I hear someone say that stuff in public, I immediately think that they are not a watch person. I don't need random people looking at my watch and saying "nice batman". Nice watch or nice Rolex gets the job done.

Same here. I hate the childish nicknames some of the models have too, really don't care much for Coke, Pepsi or Root Beer either, can't we just call them what they are?? I also see no reason the OP even bothered to bring this topic up, to each his own if he wears a replica.
