Outgoing... (ridiculous day)

I'd recently been deliberating on whether to add a Milgauss (zBlue) to, or swap for, my Exp1 (mk2).

Today, I got rid of the Exp1 because it just wasn't doing it for me. It's a watch that I have a lot of respect for, but I wasn't getting a buzz when I put it on or checked the time. It was quite impulsive, but I decided to get rid of it because there was simply no reason to justify keep it.

So the plan was to pick up a Milgauss later in the day. I headed to the AD to try on the Milly but became distracted... a white 39mm OP. After a good half hour trying both on, I decided to go for the Milgauss (seeing that it could become discontinued any time in the coming months/years, and the OP should be around for some time). But the OP is so much more understated and screams quality in a way that the Milgauss doesn't (the Milgauss is certainly a screamer, but in other ways). So I told the dealer that I'd get the OP instead. No, actually the Milgauss. I soon realised that I was too torn to buy either and had to walk away to sleep on it.

Although a watch is obviously a personal decision, I'm interested: which of these would you go for?

I prefer the z blue. The combination of the blue dial and green crystal is very beautiful and can't be found elsewhere. The white op is nice but I feel it will get boring after short while.

White OP is new so you can grab one later. Keep the milgauss and grab the new OP when you have the cash.

The milgauss, although very nice is not my thing so I would have chosen the new white OP39.

Zblue for the dial - interesting matchup as they are both non black dials

I have one reservation for each watch:

- Milgauss: The angled bezel isn't ideal. I had this on the Exp1 and it's a scratch magnet (plus I don't think is as elegant as the smooth domed bezel you get on an OP). I could live with it, but I'm not mad about it. They seem to be on quite a few Rolex models at the moment, including DJ41.

- OP: Although this is almost the perfect watch, it is described by many an "entry level" Rolex. Whilst I don't wear a watch to prove a point or for status etc, I do feel like I can do better (spend more?) on something that would ultimately be a daily wearer. Is there anyone out there who regularly wears an OP, despite having/being able to afford something which is more than "entry level"?

Based on your comments, does not sound like you are committed to either. Maybe you have not found the "one" yet?

I prefer the GV, but between the two you’ve listed I’d pick up the Blue Z

This may well be right. For the past 10 years, I've been wearing a 34mm blue OP (technically the old Airking, with a 369 dial) and it's almost the perfect watch. The reason it's "almost" perfect is because it's just a bit on the small side. I guess that the Milgauss and OP (and the now discarded Exp1) are common enough to pick up from a boutique, so it's an easy way of scratching the itch. Other than those watches, I'm not sure that there's any current model in the Rolex Range which is quite the "one" (other than Cellini Moonphase, which now isn't the right time to purchase).

I was very tempted to do that today.

But in order to preserve my marriage, I probably shouldn't (not least because I'd need to get a third to add to my wife's DJ...)

Got you. Since you have a vintage OP, maybe the Milgauss makes more sense for something a little different. Vote is not helping much as it is dead even...

Buying a watch shouldn’t be this difficult. If I have reservations, I would just move on.

I can see how you got bored of the Explorer but that could happen with any piece. The new OP looks so versatile and safe I don't see how you can go wrong. That being said I'd go for the Zblue it always looks stunning, I never get tired of looking at mine. Ok I'm biased

I’d go blue too or black. Perhaps white. I would love a green dial with the crystal though.

Wow that is a very tough choice between two great watches. I like them both but lean white OP because of the price difference.

Though the correct answer is to get both.

I agree, but I don't know if I'd describe the white OP as "boring" (the dial has a very interesting colour/texture), but I suppose it is a relatively vanilla watch.

Thank you for all the (100+!) votes in this poll. It’s interesting how close the split is, and I am slightly surprised that the Milgauss has taken the lead.

I do wonder how many of those who voted (either way) have seen the White OP in the flesh. It is a very striking watch.

As it turns out, I’ve spent much more time today reminiscing over the White OP than the Milgauss. It’s really more of a sand-blasted platinum finish rather than a true white. And it would never risk looking “silly”, which part of me does fear the Milgauss could, e.g. in business meetings, or even in court (I’m a lawyer and this would be a daily wearer, if that makes much difference).

Anyway, there won’t be a watch purchase today and I think I am going to leave it some time to compose my thoughts on this one.

To update members...

I didn’t get either the Z-blue or the white OP 39.

I got a blue YM in August. A lovely watch, but again it just didn’t feel right, so I sold it before Xmas.

The search for “the one” continues:
- I am very interested in the ALS Saxonia Thin (37mm) and may get one, but it won’t satisfy the itch for a solid SS sports watch.
- Part of me regrets selling the Exp1. It wasn’t the world’s most perfect watch, and didn’t work as my only watch (it became impossible to wear the 34mm OP after wearing the 39mm 214270 as a daily), but I now realise that it has a place in virtually any collection (particularly alongside a dress watch and maybe another sports watch).
- I am waiting to see what comes out of Basel before jumping to purchase another Rolex, but I may pick up the Exp1 again this year...
- the Milgauss Z-blue is beautiful, but too much of a novelty for me. I’d need at least two other watches in the collection before adding it.

Interesting thread. From your description, you don't sound like a milguass-type guy. Sounds like the OP is more your style. And...maybe the EXP is, too. I think holding off and being sure sounds like the good plan.

I agree. Hold off and catch your breath. You might consider a 36mm Explorer. I liked the 39mm Explorer, but after a year it was sold. I bought a 36mm Explorer, which I think is just perfect. Exp 2 is also no slouch if a bigger SS pro model is what you’re after.
