Rough week for my watches

Well, two days ago I chipped the crystal on my SD43.

Today, wearing my 116613LB I notice scratch marks on the minute hand. NO idea how that happens...

The SD43, I'll live with, the 116613LB is off for service.

Not my best week but I guess it could always be worse!

Wait, those scratches are new? You better have someone take a look at the watch. If there's debris or something it could get into the movement. At the very least, you need an explanation for it.

Looks like the round lume plot on the second hand might be rubbing the top of the minute hand! Has this watch ever been serviced/opened up?

Can't do much about the chip on the crystal.
As for the scratched minute hand, well it appears the hour hand is hitting it as
evidenced by the burr on the Mercedes part of it.

Oh you're right. It does look like that's happening.

Yep, the second hand is rubbing.

I'm a retired watch repairman (Rolexes, too) and getting proper clearance of all hands, with respect to each other is very important. Also, the hour hand must clear the dial and all markers ... and the second hand must clear the crystal.

Obviously, proper hand clearance allows the watch to run properly. One rub and timing can be compromised and/or you'll experience damage like the OP.

I was reading another thread where a RSC took macro's of the watch hands and said that they were scratched upon arrival. The OP stated that he had owned the watch since it was new and questioned how his watch hands may have been scratched. The RSC told him that if a watch is bumped hard enough the hands may move which may cause scratching. I had never heard of this before.

Those scratches on the LB would have been there since day 1 if no1 has opened the watch. This is what happens when you start taking macro pictures and the light hits exactly in the correct position to highlight those.

You just didnt notice until now.

Yep. Happened to me as well with a PM Piece but it was on the dial!!!

It looked perfect inside but in the sun there was a massive scratch that the sunlight would highlight.

So whenever I buy watches now especially sunburst dials I take my phone light to the dial to ensure that never happens to me again.

After that experience I've learnt to QC my watches extremely well.

Were you wearing long sleeves or a short sleeved shirt when you chipped your SD50th?

Short sleeves. Whacked an old, 90's gold colored door knob!

If that’s the case, I would think this is something that is covered under the Rolex warranty. Maybe not but I would think that if the hands are rubbing that it could be covered.

Rough week for my watches

OP, do you any updates you can provide from RSC regarding your 116613LB scratched hands? I know it’s a long shot, but did they cover it under warranty?

How's the door knob? I hope it didn't get damaged too badly! Just kidding. Bad joke......

Seriously tho, sorry to hear about the rough week for your watches. Very interesting about the scratched minute hand. I have never heard of this before and I learned something new today. Great tips here on what to look for, especially when buying a pre-owned. I otherwise would never have thought to look for this issue. Thanks for sharing and I hope things get sorted out soon. You're absolutely right.....Keep in mind that things could always be worse!
