Which modern Rolex sports model you think is the worst commercial flop

I was at my local boutique (its hk everyone goes grey market), and started a discussion about literally the worst selling model Rolex have ever released. Now I know a lot of you will say Cellini, so I am counting that out. We are only talking sports model here.

To me without a shadow of doubt, is the white gold Yacht Master II with the platinum bezel. It was meant to be the creme de la creme of the range, its resale value is now often lower than the two tone version.

I also think the Deepsea is a flawed model, but then again, the sales seem to be strong, I used to like the D blue until I wore it for 3 months and couldn't stand the sight of it.

What do you guys think?

I feel that is is imbalanced. I am currently wearing AP 26470BA, so I am no stranger to heavy watches, I felt that the Deepsea created an imbalance on my wrist, too top heavy and does not wear comfortably.

It could just be me, but as a solid Sea Dweller fan, I did not see the Deepsea as an improvement.

Maybe you’re right Ed, after all, Rolex have seen fit to alter the bracelet this year, to a wider, some say more balanced affair.
Personally I love my ‘MK 1’ Deepseas, I’ve got all the fancy SS Rolex, that everyone covets, and you can believe it or not, but my go to watch is usually my Black Deepsea.

Though not as popular as Sub’s, GMT’s and Daytona’s, they certainly don’t languish in glass cabinets unsold for too long, at least in the UK.

Actually, the Deepsea in the 126660 (2018 update) is very comfortable,* and I’m left to conclude that comfort was seriously pursued along with the over-engineering. I bought mine as a weekend watch and it is becoming my daily wearer. I’ll do my best not to get road rage in three months.


*I have no wrist time with the 116660 so I have no idea, but I have always been a fan of it’s appearance.

Im sure the deepsea was never designed with comfort or style in mind as it is designed to do what it does best and thats go deep.

My Deepsea is very comfortable. It's not cartoony at all.. you just need the body frame to support it. A guy that's 5'8" 165 isn't the same as 6'2" 225 wearing one. But each will work in their own way.

Preference is just that. I think all Pateks and APs are horrid. That's me. A billion other people are contrarian to that, and that's fine!

I was offered a Deep Sea Cameron at MSRP recently, I loved the blue/black dial but was disappointed when I tried it on, the watch felt unbalanced. The salesperson, kept saying how fortunate I was to be offered the watch, but it was also a lot of money for a watch I didn't want so I respectfully declined.

I'm not sure why anyone would buy a watch built for deep sea diving and wear it every day. I would think a GMT would be far more comfortable and practical and would think it would be the most sought after watch. I certainly respect the people who bought the watch and dive with a deep sea. I somewhat feel the same about the Submariner, why buy one if your not going to dive with it.

Obviously you are a pilot and track the different timezones with a GMT

Again none of my post is meant to come off as offensive. I myself am 6’2 220 pounds with an almost 8 inch wrist, just sharing my personal subjective experience as a previous owner of the D Blue.

That being said, the deep sea is certainly not a commercial flop.

The current Air King is definitely the biggest flop. That YM you're talking about is quite nice, it's just expensive. If it were a few thousand dollars less retail it would fly off the shelves. Meanwhile the Air King is only like $5,000 plus a bit, and almost every AD has one.

The SD4000 is definitely proof that Rolex is responsive to the market, contrary to many saying otherwise.

Well said. I don’t care at the end of the day. I remember the Explorer II when it was updated to 42mm, and the orange fat 24 hour hand was being blasted by some for being cartoonish. Others loved it. Eye poking on social media is really a ‘who cares’. It just doesn’t matter.
