I think i'll go with the OP now and see if Rolex will release a new Explorer in a smaller case size at any point and get that one too sometime down the road for a 2 piece Rolex collection.

I decided on the Blue OP, which I purchased new recently with the 3,6,9 Arabic dial.

Going new is very tempting and a fresh start to make memories with the watch, rather than a used 114270 and with the modern upgrades seems like the way to go.

Are you using it as your daily wearer? How's the lume? Is it green?

I was on the same scenario recently and went with the 114270 from 2008.

New enough for me and with Rolex Rehault it adds a modern touch.


If you are buying the OP 36mm 3,6,9 dial because you wanted an Explorer than you will always wish you had the Explorer.

If there was a new 36mm Explorer I would probably get that, shame that the newest used ones are 8 years old.
The upgrades on a new OP are hard to ignore. The blue dial is awesome too, it's the Explorers horological father and has done a great deal of 'exploring' itself.

Do you think there will ever be 2 sizes in the Explorer line?

I do not think Rolex would offer a NEW 36mm. As they are now they cant apparently keep up with demand so why change.

My old 14270 Explorer ( I have 114270 now) I had waterproof service done to it, which they replaced all the seals and the crown and water tested it at 10 BAR. After that I wore it swimming often, wore it while working on the yard, and even while doing some house upgrades using power tools. Yet in about a 6 month of wearing it daily it kept time perfectly and I did not adjust it at all. I live in a Farm but work in an office so I need something for both environments. Tuff enough for the farm life but nice enough to wear with my collar shirts.

The White Dial OP is very nice too. Even the indices variant with no numerals is awesome. I myself will pick up the indices variant Used at some point.

Of the two, I would go for the OP only because it’s new, has a better warranty and you can be more confident going in the water without the need of having RSC check gaskets. But I’d go with a new Explorer 39 hands down over a new OP 36. In fact, I did. But you buy what you need. If I was a diver, I’d buy a sub, if I was a world traveler, I’d buy a GMT, If I collected cars or raced them, I’d buy a Daytona. If I wore a suit every day I’d probably wear a DD. I do a lot of hiking and exploring in the Western US, so I wear an Explorer. Plus, I think it’s the best looking watch they make with a classic, minimalist, but sporty look.

Whichever you choose, you’ll end up with a great watch.

OP, have you tried the 39mm Explorer?

Seems your wrist is a flat 6.5mm and might be fine proportion-wise.

I owned the 114270 and have 6.5” wrists as well, though rounded so the 214270 didn’t work for me.



If not the 39mm Explorer, I would recommend the blue OP 36. I traded in my 114270 for the 2018 white OP 34 myself. I feel the current generation OP makes it a solid upgrade.

Still leaning towards a new OP at the moment, however the decision is still quite up in the air.

I have tried on a 39mm Explorer and the difference in weight and feel with the 36 is definitely substantial. One of a few reasons i'm selling my IWC pilot (39mm) is the idea of moving to a slightly smaller case size might be better as a daily wearer for me. What do ya think?

I have the 39mm Explorer, short hands and WG numerals and I love it, reliable, durable and discreet. That said, the 36mm OP is also a favorite of mine, and of the two you are considering, my preference. The updated bracelet, clasp, the nicer dial and...it's brand new.

It wasn't a feeling it was just a question on which is the better GADA.

I love both. I'm not rooting for the OP, but I can't be blind to the newer updates. Many people in this thread seem to think they are worth it.

I have said before that if there were a new EX 36 I would get that, that's what makes this decision a V difficult one. If the Explorer was the new watch and OP a used one, it would be a no brainer for the Exp.

As i'm leaning slightly more to the OP, focusing on its merits for example in the 'history thread' is a good way to justify the decision.

Do people swim and do rigorous activities with their 20+ year old Rolex and don't necessarily have to worry?

The 39mm looks fine as a modern watch on your hands (e.g. a bigger watch). However, if you’re going for the more traditional dressy watch, then a 36mm watch is better proportion-wise IMO.

The 114270 will be absolutely fine doing rigorous activities. It’s a relatively modern watch, so I wouldn’t worry.

Having said that, the updates in the 214270 or current generation OP does make it feel substantial and “modern”. For me, the new bracelet and clasp is worth the “upgrade” compared to the 114270. The older bracelet is by no means not secure etc, just didn’t have the heft I associate with the current gen Rolex references like the 116710LN (which I got after the 114270).

You’ll just have to decide what’s worth it for you. Good luck!
