Lume difference - minute/hour hand

Hello!

I have a question that as been bugging me for a while;
I have a Rolex which is 14 years old (bought second hand) and I have been wondering some time now if it is common that the luminscent paint is weaker on one hand as compared to another. In my case the minute hand seems to be glowing with less strenght, when compared to the hour hand.

Occasionally, in some light situations the lume looks almost a little bit darker/grey in comparison to the other. Could it just be that different amount of luminescent material was added to the minute hand?

All answers are appreciated!

Thanks,
JJ

it probably wasnt charged evenly. If you shine a flashlight on it for some time you should get an even appearance

Thanks for the reply R!$!

The thing is that I let a flashlight sit straight to the dial for 1h, and the photo was taken almost straight after that.

Could 1h not be enought though?

Thanks in advance,
JJ

I have a 20 year old AK 141010 and I remember when I first bought it, the lume would light up a room. Now it's not nearly as bold as it once was.

Also, just a thought, but depending on its last service date it could be something built up on the hand that's just muting the lume.

No, it should be more than enough.

My Sub's lume is minimally charged after just a good 10 seconds of intense light, like the light on the back of my phone.

1 hour under a flashlight? It should be good! Have the hands been replaced?

Use a black light(UV light). Flashlights don't really do a great job.

From what I understand, super luminova is not supposed to degrade over time. I would guess that there is a thinner amount luminova applied to the minute hand, making it less vibrant.

I do not know if the hands have been replaced during it's lifetime. Althought, my thought was that if the hands would have been replaced, should not both hands have been replaced simultaneously (as a routine) and not just one of them. Hence, both hands should have similar luminescens?

Thanks!

Thanks for replying !

Yes, that was one of my thoughts as well. But I thought Rolex standards were so high that something like this would not occur. At the same time I do not know if the lume on the minute hand has always behaved like this. As you mentioned ; superluminova is not supposed to degrade overtime.

The watch was serviced a year ago by a Rolex ad.
What could have built up on the lume ? Do they often do something to the hands during service? They did not mention anything of this sort when I was told what would be included in the service.

Thanks!
