Hey Guys,

How does this 1680 look at first glance? I will be able to get my hands on it next week to look at serial number and look at the condition of it closer. Thanks for your help!

That top right lug looks quite thin and overpolished.

What are you looking for?

If I'm not mistaken, that has a lot of service parts:

Dial, hands, insert, crystal and polished unevenly (as noted above). Can't tell on the crown well enough to comment there... No idea on the bracelet.

For a regular daily wear piece it's perfectly serviceable; however, if you are trying to secure a collector piece, this is not it.

Yea I’m trying to see if it looks original parts or not. Guess you answered my questions. Thanks for the help! This guy is trying to sell it to me for $8,000. From what you can see On the picture would you stay away?

Well, I paid similar money for mine a couple years ago (~6k then) and it also had quite a few service parts.

But, it is a 3.9m serial and I did all the "downgrades" to original parts myself... If I had to pay for the service work (on top of the case and bracelet restoration) I'd be way on the wrong side of it.

So again, if you want to wear it as-is, the price is probably acceptable, and less cost would be a better deal. If you plan to restore it, it's probably better to keep saving and find another.

Does this hurt the value since the dial doesn’t match up with being a red sub?

Absolutely. Replaced dial for a top-dollar watch like a red Sub will be priced accordingly.

I’d suggest pay slightly more for better

The hands alone would drive me mad every time I looked at it

I hate to see that happen to a Red Sub. Oh well, who knew back then? If it was cheaper, it would make for decent, probably slow restoration project. A proper Mk. IV dial is going to be a bit hard to find though.

What type of value would you guess for this watch with the replacement dial and hands?

Agree 100%

To the OP it's not just about the price it's what you get for that price and with this watch it's a very polished case, service dial (not a problem but affects value drastically for a Red) and those hands which as said above would bother me). You would have to spend a lot to get the watch looking better and original red dials are not easy or cheap to come by. It will be easier to pass this one by and get one with an original red dial, nice hands and less polished case IMHO

Have you opened the case back?
Every watch has value. Not every watch has to be perfect!
It's easier to gage from the asking price.
Price is key. Nothing wrong with a beater watch!

That's hard to say as it's in a territory where you have buyers with a variety of goals...some will just wear it as is, some will want to fully restore it. This would be ideal for someone who has some 1680 Red parts in their parts bin. For me, it'd have to a lowball price or I wouldn't even bother...just too much work and costs to get it right. Just getting correct, verifiable parts is one of the biggest issues.
