Hollywood Cemetery

Took a walk around Hollywood Cemetery earlier today. It is named after all the holly trees on the property. The final resting place of two US Presidents and many Confederate notables here in Richmond VA.

President James Monroe:



Confederate President Jefferson Davis:



J.E.B Stuart. Confederate cavalry General killed during the civil war:









Confederate memorial pyramid built in memory of the over 18,000 enlisted men from the Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetary:

I've been to this cemetery. Kinda morbid, but I enjoy walking old cemetery's and looking at the dates, etc. This cemetery is one of the best for history.

VERY cool. I love cemetery shooting, but a lot of people are uncomfortable looking at these kinds of images. These are some of my favorites - all from a really old mission cemetery in northern New Mexico.








I love the last one... it's like the branch is the shape of a skeletal hand, plucking at the cross... I didn't move the branch in any way, I just saw it that way. Very lucky.


It is hard to tell from the resolution in the posted versions, but the names are a real kick. In the top one, you can plainly make out "Stillborn John" in the print. There are a ton of baby graves there, many outlined in small stone rings. The middle image says "Baby John Pete" in case it's hard to make out.

All, great pictures. Cemeteries should not be considered morbid. As a matter of fact my little one's 5 and 6 YO both like to visit them and look at the memorials.

Great photos Dude. I would say the middle one is my favourite. The markers look very abandoned and lonely. I have always enjoyed walking around historic graveyards. It is a humbling experience.

Both sets are great in different ways. I find cemeteries to be very peaceful, not morbid.

There is an old Mormon Settler cemetary up by my land in S. UT and it is pretty neat.

I visited Boothill Graveyard in Tombstone, some of the epitaphs there are amazing

"Here lies Lester Moore, Four slugs from a .44, No Les, no more"

"Died of complications stemming from a shot in the lung"

"Leader of the Bisbee Massacre, and hanged by a lynch mob"

"Hanged by mistake, bought a stolen horse, and was assumed to be the thief"

"Found in abandoned mine, he was found at the bottom of the Minute Mine, well dressed, indicating he was probably not a miner"



Quite aptly The Tombstone Epitaph is the name of local paper
