They seem to go for around 1/2 of retail on the pre-owned market. Are people losing that much money on re-sale, or can they be purchased at hefty discounts?

i think in todays market conditions u can get about 30% off of almost all of the 18k gold rolex models.... FROM AN AD

I'm sure that's true, but what I'm asking is if they are generally discounted heavily? Because a gold Day Date for $11-12K on the pre-owned market is less than half of retail.

im not really sure, but u can get a D serial day date.... for about 12-13k

Usually gold models can be bought at AD with hefty discount (seen from 15% to 20%) off MSRP; but if you go pre-loved, price drops a L O T. The DD is a fantastic watch; I have both a brand new (purchased @ AD) and a pre-loved; both are amazing. Why did I go AD? Well, when the new model (118238) came out, I wanted THAT one, only way was via AD; why pre-loved? I wanted a 1803.

I got my about 6 months ago for $20,500 out the door from my AD. MSRP at that time was $24,800. So that about 17% discount and no tax (8.25%)

It was also one that was not in the store. He had to order it from Rolex so I can get the dial I wanted

Thanks a lot for the responses. I suppose if you were to get a 15-20% discount in 2005, that 2 or 3 price increases later, 50% on the pre-owned market--relative to today's retail price--makes sense.

Scott, not ready to buy at the moment, but it's on my list of considerations. The Day Date is such a beautiful watch. Also, didn't think I would miss my Datejust, but I do!
