1969 Rolex GMT - What is it worth?

So it turns out my instructor in my Tai Chi class is sporting a 1969 Rolex GMT that he bought brand new and has worn all these years. He noticed my LV and asked if his was worth anything so I told him I'd check with the experts...

So is this a grail year guys? Can he buy a vacation home in the Muskokas when he sells this piece?

It is all original he only replaced the bezel when rolex serviced it a couple years ago and they re-painted the lume as well. Sorry the pics were rushed and were taken with my phone's camera! I guess you should never photograph a GMT when the GMT hand is behind the cyclops eh?

Thanx all,
Ren

What a classic! Looks like it got kicked around by Jackie Chan, Jett Li, and Bruce Lee all at the same time!
What stories that watch must tell!

He could retire to Somalia with it....

Its worth a few grand. (well at least thats what I have been told the 69 Pepsi GMT in original condition I bought with a riveted bracelet is worth)

The pros will chime in soon.

Nice watch and interesting color, is that all brown???

Boy Ren, I would have thought in the 4kish range depending on condition, but the re-lume puts a damper on that.

Re-lumes take a hit in the vintage community. Interesting that the hands look to be the original tritium?
Maybe it's just me, but it looks like there's some small cracks on the hour hand that sometimes occurs with older trit. hand sets.

Allign the bezel, clean the watch, and take som better pictures - that will help the value I am sure. It could be possible to polish the glass to reduce the effects of scratches The GMT is a very solid and reliable watch that with service should last for generations.

Would have to agree with Mike but if he has the service papers that state Rolex did the re-lume that would be a bonus.

I'll check with him next time I see him to see what paper work he has. I don't think he would ever sell it though this will just be for insurance appraisal... you wear a watch for that many years and it will be going with you right in to the ground!

Doesn't matter who did the relume. That puts a serious damper on the price.

Untouched dial is critical for value on a vintage sport model.
