Gold Datejust the Watchmakers choice?

I've been to see two watchmakers this week and both were wearing gold datejusts -- one on a two tone bracelet and one on a leather strap.

Is this the watchmaker's watch of choice?

my watchmaker wears a 1675 GMT. It's luck of the draw, there a lot of great timepieces out there besides Rolex.

One of the guys I go to (for batteries for my cheap quartz watches) surprisingly does wear a Rolex Day-Date, even though he mostly sells Citizens and Bullova's (and changes batteries). I have never asked him his motivation, but I am guessing that the Rolex is not just a good watch for him, but lends him a slight bit of prestige as well. If at some point I find myself with the money, I think I will buy a day date too--White Gold, I think.

I don't think I've ever seen a gold DJ in the wild. Last time I checked in at the SF RSC, G was wearing a red sub.
