Historic Classic Discontinued, the 36mm Gold Datejust

It was the first self-winding, water resistant wristwatch with a date window on the dial. It was worn by Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, and Dwight D Eisenhower. Now, after more than 70 years of production, the gold 36mm Datejust is dead. Perhaps taking the backseat to the Day-Date for the past 60 years was just too much? Regardless, I think that I’ll keep mine. A moment of silence, please.

I have the junior size which was the craze 2 tone Datejust in the 90s. My wife is wearing it now.

Bought the SS Black Dial at 36mm. It does wear nicely on the wrist!

Beautiful watch, no importance of who worn it. I think it has been discontinued just to be updated with the new style at some point.

Thought these were long gone. I can see how there's too much overlap with DD. Can you get DD on jubilee if you wanted?

Bummer - It's a beautiful watch. It was given out by Bechtel as a top award watch for years

Beautiful watch. I have to ask, is any model line ever really dead? There is always the chance of a future revival. Updated and modified, but still potentially reborn.

A relative of mine has one from working for Bechtel and wears it daily. I'm not sure how long he's had it but the watch has seen some serious wear time. Vacations, casual, dress, yard work, in the woodworking shop...it doesn't matter. He wears that gold watch harder than I've ever seen anyone do.

Bechtel has always had the reputation for tradition and loyalty and the gold DJ, ref 116238 with Champagne stick dial, fit that mold perfectly. Not long ago, 20 years, a Bechtel director drove a Buick Park Avenue and a SVP drove a LeSabre. To drive a Cadillac, your name had to start with a B. There where no Pontiacs, no Chevrolets, and no Audis. It all made sense, not too flashy or compromised, Buick stood for conservative American business values like no other vehicle. Times have changed, Bechtel has changed too, yet tradition and loyalty are two qualities that never really go out of style. However, in the era of quarterly profits and do or die stock reports, tradition and loyalty have come under strain. It’s only because Bechtel is private that we’ve been able to keep the watch tradition alive for so long. It will be interesting to see what happens to the gold DJ tradition at Bechtel. My guess is that when the current supply runs out, gold will turn to SS and the end of an era will be marked. An end of an era not only for Bechtel, but for traditional American business where loyalty ranks high and is rewarded.

Just took a quick look....not shown on Rolex website but gray dealer Alan Furman shows it. Reference is 116238. That's a beautiful watch and a great retirement gift. Personally I got a nice pen, a lapel pin and a certificate.
