MSRP or discount from AD on SS DJs?
I posed this question in another thread and got no feedback, so rather than co-opt the OP's thread, I'll ask it here separately...
I know there's been a lot of mention of the scarcity/craziness of prices with the stainless models, but does that apply to watches like OPs and DJs as well? I'm in the market for a fairly commonplace stainless steel DJ, and am wondering whether I will be laughed out of my AD for expecting a similar discount to when I bought an OP a few years back. Any thoughts/recent experiences? Thanks! |

When my buddy bought his DJ41 from the local ORJ, he got no discounts. However, my buddy is also on the wait list for the BLNR. So that might have something to do with it.

I wouldn’t buy one without getting a good discount.

You can try for 10-15% depending if you are a regular customer or planning to get something else otherwise retail may be the best you could do

If you don't ask you don't get. It's debatable if you will get a discount if you do ask. But if you don't, then you definitely won't. In the UK, I don't think ADs need to discount any SS model. But I wouldn't let that put me off. What will they do? Throw me out of the shop?

Ask, it’s absolutely worth a try. If there’s no discount, but it’s a watch you like and want, pay the man his money.

I made 4 purchases from my AD this year and my wife 1. One of mine being a DJ41. I recieved a 15% discount with tax included. It was an allocated piece which had to be ordered in which l paid for in full at the time of the order. I know ADs are tightening up and trying not to discount at all so it really depends how close you can work with them. I'm sure any history would help. One thing l would suggest is never ask for a discount until your ready to pull the trigger.

DJ 36, Jubilee, Fluted, silver stick dial – i.e., 116234-0080. Not exactly a unicorn, I shouldn't think...pretty bog standard.
Here's what ended up happening and a little more background/rant. I split my time between two cities, and the AD I was talking to was the one from whom I bought my Oyster Perpetual a few years back. I got a pretty decent discount on it at the time with little effort, and found the experience to be pleasant. Out of some misplaced sense of allegiance, I decided to go back to that AD instead of buying it out of the case from another dealer in the city where I spend most of my time – NYC. It's not like it's a difficult piece to find. So, I call up my AD and tell him that I've been looking at pieces here in NYC and know what I want, and get the hours he'll be working on the days I'm in town so I can stop by to pick it up. I also make it clear that whenever it is that GMT supply/demand insanity cools off a bit – assuming that happens during my lifetime – that I'm in for one of those as well. He mentioned that they we're having a financing event coming up in November but that he wouldn't be able to work on the price if I went that route as opposed to paying cash (the obvious implication being that they were willing to work on it for a cash sale). Fast forward to this past weekend. I stop by the store on Saturday and wait a good 45 minutes while he's with other customers (not his fault) and rando saleswomen try to sell me watches I tell them I have no interest in. At this point, I told him to text or call when he's free and that I'd walk around the area until then. I gave up after about 20 more minutes of milling around outside. Sunday came and went with no word back from him and I left for NYC. I get a call from him today and when I said I was ready to do the deal, asked for his best price if I'm wiring money and not monkeying around with house credit or putting it on a card. He offered me a whopping 0% off MSRP. I reiterated that it was a cash purchase and that I was ready to pull the trigger – he said Rolex "wouldn't allow them to discount them right now because they're so rare". I was prepared to pay somewhere between the gray market going rate and MSRP, but given that I'm not after anything super rare and am a repeat customer, I expected them to work with me somewhat on the price. I didn't lead any of the salespeople with whom I spoke in NYC on, but they seemed eager for the business and I know I can get it a little more than a 15% discount on it if I go gray...so it looks like it'll be one of those two routes for me... |

walk in cash in hand and have an out of state address to ship to. you will save the tax and at least 5% off msrp negotiate well and you'll receive 10+ % off . truth is all depends on AD and if its in stock, but most will do this

At this point, I'm leaning towards just going with a gray market dealer and saving a great deal more – with the all the warranty implications. I mean, I'm not gonna go back for the privilege of paying full retail from my AD, so the whole repeat customer thing goes out the window. There was a really nice lady one of the NYC ADs who helped me a lot when I was pretty clear that I was just browsing, so I may try that, but I'm not holding out much hope. Again, I could stomach retail a little more easily if I were after a Professional series or a veritable hen's tooth of a DJ combo – but as far as they go, this one is a dime a dozen. |

Speaking of the DJ41, I have decently slim wrists (6.5") and thought the 41 would be too big (I prefer smaller watches, to boot). I tried it on while at the store and really liked it. If I wasn't so hell-bent to get the Crownclasp on the Jubilee, I'd strongly consider it! |

Local AD offered no discount on DJ41. Luckily found a used 1month old for around $6400. Black dial Smooth/ Oyster.

Agreed: Depends on the piece, and the dealer.
I just purchased a DJ with silver dial/fluted bezel at 15% off two days ago, and they shipped to my home. So depends which way the wind is blowing that day I'm thinkin..... |

My AD offers 10% disc here, they are usually expecting 2-3 pieces coming in every month. They are not really that rare, unless you are looking for specific configuration like fluted blue/rhodium then you will need to wait up to 3-6 months.

Check around in person. Some dealers are motivated some are not. I would let them know you are ready to buy. Good luck.

I was under the impression that being an existing customer at my AD counted for something more than it apparently does. It’s not just the price thing; it’s also the way I was more or less ignored when I came to the store on my vacation, and didn’t get a call back later that day – or even the next day for that matter. I left out a whole part about how he kept failing to call me back in the few weeks before I came out to visit, and I had to keep chasing him up. The whole thing kinda soured me on that AD. |

I would never wait 45 min. You should walk out, and let him go after you. That's would be the way to see if you could get a discount. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Quite honestly, the only reason I waited even that long were because he had forewarned me it would be a bit of a madhouse with some diamond event they were starting that day. It was about 20 min before he even emerged from the back of the store and they seemed like they were even able to relay to him that I was there. He was cordially apologetic, but after it was clear he wouldn’t be free anytime soon, I walked. And he didn’t call back that day. Or the day after. So, here we are.
