Verifying authenticity

Hello all,

I’m about ready to pull the trigger on my grail with OCWatch. I know they have a great reputation here, but I’m curious about whether I should still make sure all is correct with the watch when I get it. If so, is it sufficient to take it to a rolex dealer with an in house watchmaker or do you need to send it to a Rolex Service Center?

Thanks in advance.

You can bring it to an AD that buys used watches and ask what they'd give you for it. If its not 100% legit they usually won't make an offer.

It seems to me like you're already questioning your seller. I would suggest that you just buy your grail from an AD, the peace of mind is worth the premium IMO.

Patrick wouldn’t sell you a fake. But get it checked if that helps you sleep better. No problem with that.

yeah you're good to go with Patrick.

When I bought my first watch from DavidSW 5 years ago, I felt the same way. It's not uncommon when making a big purchase like this online.

That said, you don't have anything to worry about, but as hard_six said, Patrick will take good care of you. You don't have anything to worry about.

I remember my first deal with Patrick, and other TS. I aways worried a little back then. Now, I would not bother to have anything checked. You are good to go.

Perhaps I should clarify. It isn’t that I distrust the motives of the seller. They seem like a very reputable group. I was just wondering if there is something more a person should do in this situation.

Thanks very much for your reassurance!

Short answer, no. He has the “trusted seller” reputation for a reason. If you don’t feel comfortable though, then yes, you should get it checked. That’s all you can do really.

This is your best option if you feel so inclined. You could also send to Rolex for an insurance evaluation. That said, Patrick’s reputation on this forum is worth way more to him than selling a bogus watch.

The peace of mind that you seek is your own. What do you need to do that will help you sleep better at night.

I would trust him unequivocally.. Because I've done many deals with Patrick and he's never shown me any reason to doubt him on any sort of customer service... Much less authenticity. But do what you must to satisfy your own fears/paranoia....I can understand how something on the back of your mind can drive you up the wall. But if I had to bet, I'd say that would be a waste of time or money if you're paying some place to authenticate.

Do all TSs open the watch and ensure all is in order? How can they determine if there are aftermarket internal parts on the watch?

Seems likely that they all have a watch guy on hand. In addition to authenticity, they need to confirm that a watch is running properly and has no "hidden" damage that might come back to bite them. Plus, if you look at the pics of their used watches, it's often obvious that the watch has received a pretty skilled polishing job.

Although, of course, many of these watches are coming straight from ADs, even some of the "used" ones.

Most of them do have a WM open up the back of the watch. Patrick is a stand up guy with integrity. But, you should absolutely drive down to a RSC or a certified watchmaker at an AD and verify it. It seems as though that is likely the only way you will sleep ok at night with no worries.

You have nothing to worry about with Patrick or his watches. He's as stand up as they come and has as much integrity as anyone I know.

I trust many of the long-time sellers here. Patrick is one of those people.

Yet I still take each incoming watch to my nearby independent, Rolex and Omega certified, CWM21 watchmaker for verification. Trust but verify - it will be your reputation at risk once you sell or trade it onward.

If you don’t have one, then the RSC is a good option if the seller’s return policy allows that much time. Last thought - if the RSC finds it on the theft list - be sure that’s covered by the return policy, too.

Patrick is great and I have done quite a few deals with him for some very expensive watches. I have never had an issue with a watch from him.

I have bought a number of watches from Patrick. He is as good as a trusted seller gets. If you dont trust him then buy from an AD.
