Because you can't buy a SubC right now in some markets. People don't want to wait 3 months for a watch they want now, especially right around Christmas time when it might be a gift.

I have no idea if the supply and demand effect is organic or artificial but its what people perceive. It is hard to find many SS models in BNIB form at an AD and the price is higher at the greys. So people look for used so the demand has gone up. I lucked out, I walked in to my ad and they had a sub nd in the case last year.

I got on my AD list for a Pepsi the day it was announced at Basel 18. I thought, "wow, that thing looks awesome, I love the colors and the jubilee bracelet, and people are crazy so I could probably profit from it!"
I picked it up 11/5/18. Can't stop looking at it. Can't even imagine selling it for free money, because there's no other watch I like more that I'd buy with that extra money.
Why do people pay a premium for the best watches on the planet?
Because that is the watch they want on their wrist.

That color combo has been available in WG for several years with no wait.

Of course. It's thirty-three years old and used. It's not rare. And the newer versions are more comfortable and accurate. Am I missing something?

At only triple the price and 85% durability! The jubilee bracelet makes this one great, check out the sheen. Hard to capture in pictures, but the 904L looks so different, brushed vs polished.

I'm buying a unworn (which really means worn but without scratches and babied) SubC today at MSRP.

So yeah there is a premium. Rolex is a strange company whereas walking off the lot with one doesn't mean it looses value it gains it as soon as you leave the store.

Greys do well.

A local one here is in his 30’s and drives a R8.

Mass produced watches are not an investment, they are a fashion statement. Fashion trends change on a dime and this certainly applies to watches. It's like buying a pair of designer jeans and expecting them to appreciate over time. They may be worth more than you paid for a moment but next thing you know they are hanging in a Nordstrom Rack at 50% off. Gold Rolex's used to command huge money, then gold jewelry fell out of fashion and now you can buy a gold rolex for a fraction of the cost.

Something tells me gold Rolex's are still worth more the SS models...

So how are things in Oz now? Last I heard new Subs in AD's were rarer than hen's teeth. Is there still a wait of over a year for a basic SS Sub?

Of course it's more durable. WG scratches much more easily. I don't mean that the WG will be falling apart, but over time is will wear down more, and scratch deeper

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. As long as there are buyers, prices will increase.

So, a shortage of a luxury consumer product has somehow morphed into a moral crisis??

Demand > Supply = Higher prices

This relates to everything and anything in life.

Don't understand the big fuzz.

"The Big Fuzz" is the nickname of the girl you pick up at a bar after a long dry spell. Demand > Supply...

You guys are continuing to make me feel good about my small, but potent Rolex collection. However, since when have ADs (we’re not talking Greys and individuals) been selling Rolexes above MSRP? My AD told me that Rolex prohibits that. I’m not naive if you tell me that ADs have been violating Rolex’ directives, but I hadn’t heard of that before this thread. So, kindly enlighten me.

Exactly!

Rolex sells luxury not watches and could not be more thrilled with the current state of things. Some are literally falling all over themselves trying to buy luxury high end jewelry!
