Dealer holds all the cards unless you know what spot you will be on the list with a guaranteed time frame and a refundable deposit.

I have put deposits down on hard to get models (not Rolex) and had to wait. This stops folks from putting their name down if not serious. Also stops folks from putting their name on multiple lists too. As long as refundable and you know where you are on the list and approx expected delivery times.

50 % down, to be on a no deadlne wait list. Have to be rich to have that kind of disposable income and even then, not a good business decision ... sounds like a move for rolex enthusiasm over common sense...

According to the Pontiff (the Horned One) some AD's are expecting tips to get in line for a popular watch model.

I know for a fact that the main Rolex AD in West Palm Beach wants 50% down to get on the list to buy steel sports watches; the guy flat out told me that it filters out the tire kickers. He said I could get in line for a Hulk, Batman and other SS watches (except Pepsi, Daytona or Blue SD). No guarantee on delivery date.

Sometimes you gotta pay to play.

If you are worried about the 50% liquid being tied up in a watch, I honestly don’t think you should be buying the watch anyway.

Yes. It’s a lot of money. But imho, these purchases should be with disposable money. Not cash you potentially need for something else.

As others have said, this cuts down on the flippers for profit. And it keeps their list REAL. Instead of having their potential customers on 30 lists, now they know you are serious and buying from them.

So it keeps their list real, and small. IMHO, this is the best way for the watch world to proceed.
I agree, this would actually be a very effective way to deter flippers. I hope more AD’s do this, or rather, this becomes a standard practice. Without the flippers and greys, we wouldn’t have had to deal with this kind of ridiculous drought.

When the AD has you put down a deposit and you do so, he is trying then to take you out of the market and going to other AD's. He is banking on the fact that you will not put more than one deposit down on the watch, and therefore he locks you in. This is done all the time when buying a car that is not on the dealers lot. He tells you that he can find the car for you, but needs a deposit. Once you put the deposit down for the car, you are not going to shop at other car dealers, he has you locked in.

I just put down 100% for a BLNR and was guaranteed less than 6 months. However he made sure to get the order in the system as soon as he took it so that he could get it as quickly as possible. According to him the order was placed directly through Rolex.

This is a major dealer by the way, top 3.

New movie out .... "Bits of Sky-Coin"

Maths ; 3 a year,+100 applicants = Scarce

Here is the deal :

50% deposit with a written and signed contract between buyer(you) and seller(AD) that the product will be delivered in a certain quarter or third of a year.Doesn't matter if its in 2019/2020

Only then can you give a 50% deposit.

I don't do it that way.I say what I want and if it arrives I pay in full.If it doesn't...tough.

I was new to the area as I have just retired. I went in for a service on a tired TT Sub (F Serial) and was looking over the newer subs. The dealer said he'd give me a good trade in amount on a new watch. I'm thinking $1000 service averted. He gives me an offer which is $2k more than I paid for it about 10 years ago. I said, "How do we do this?" The AD said, he'd take my watch and the remainder to make up the retail price, so 100% deposit. Expect the watch in 2-3 weeks. TT Subs are not too much in demand. In 2 weeks it came in. At that time, I asked about a DSSD-Blue, and he said 100% and 4-6 months. I wore the new sub and gave him 100% retail for the James Cameron model. The DSSD 126660 came in 3 months (plus 2 days). When I came in, he did all the un-boxing, sticker removal and hold the warranty card for 3 months. (I already had the card on the TT Sub).
When I put the DSSD on my wrist, he acknowledged I needed another link, so he ordered one (free of charge).
He then said... I have a stainless sub, root beer GMT, and another popular model (just can't remember which one), may have been a Sea Dweller. If you want any of them, they're yours, no waiting." I looked down at the case, and he said, "Oh, no... those won't go in the case." I passed for now, but may be back soon.
Long story to say I don't feel 50% is excessive when I put 100% down. All deposits were refundable whenever I wanted, if I changed my mind.

At my local AD they have a 3 person list for the BLNR and it requires a 50% down payment. They put the order in the system when you pay your deposit. They don't have a list to get on the 3 person list. When I visited last month I asked if there was a spot open on the list, there was, so I placed my deposit. He couldn't promise me a delivery date but estimated 2-4 months.

I visited them last week (a month after placing the order) and he said the two people ahead of me had recently received their watches and though it may still be a few months wait the next one is mine. He went on to say that mine was the last order that Rolex would allow him to place for the BLNR because they were designating it an "allocation piece" from here on.

I did not have a problem paying the deposit. It's the only modern Rolex I'm interested in and I've got plenty of nice watches to keep my wrist company until it arrives.
