I'd ask if they'd do it if my watch wasn't purchased from them and then deal with it accordingly based on their response.

You must learn to do this yourself. This is a very simple thing. Do not put yourself at the mercy of rude watch salespeople.

OP, would you mind doing yourself and anyone else who buys Rolex watches a favor? Kindly write a letter to Rolex about your experience, name the dealer and the person you spoke to. Please print it out, put it in an envelope and send it to:

I have to say you took a chance to have them work on your watch. I’ve heard many slip up.

Just size it yourself. Buy the mini screwdriver. Takes 5 mins.

Great post and exactly as I see it as well.

Not too sure why 'it should be free' to walk in clients with no history. Obviously you should be treated with respect in the hope you return in the future to make a more substantial purchase/service but charging a fee is reasonable. In fact (and this may just be my inner cynic; I am always sceptical of anything done gratis. There's no such thing as a free lunch). The same goes for checking water resistance, magnetism and timekeeping.

On another note when you handle as many watches per year as we do statistically something unexpected is bound to happen e.g. scratched link, stripped thread, marked slot, link falls apart etc. A nominal charge goes a little way to mitigate such losses.

This isn't to say I don't do these things for free from time to time, but that's ultimately down to my discretion. When a big attitude walks through the door 'expecting' services for free, goodwill tends to be absent from my mind in those circumstances.

My AD's watchmaker will size any watch i have for me no cost. I always call ahead and offer to pay of course and willing, but never needed to so far. So long as you've purchased prior, more than likely won't have to pay imo

The Rolex boutique in Sydney quoted me $200 for this for a watch I got elsewhere. I was like "are you effin joking or what?"

I went to another jeweler and they did it for $15. Some watchmakers that reside in boutiques think we are stupid or something. Sydney boutique owned by Kennedy is a joke of a place. They will never get my business.

That's an insane price for sizing....was it a PM watch?

Actually it wasn't. It was for a DJ41 twin tone. I couldn't believe the price quote - nearly fell off my chair.

Honestly, that is insulting. With a Platinum of Gold watch at least they could somewhat justify the accidentals, but not TT links. I would've fell off my chair and then asked them if they accidentally quoted Yen
