1994: Before TRF... 1 Rolex for 20 years (sub date - not even bought - gifted to me for job well done at work)...

2014: Join TRF...

2019: realization hits... I have too many watches... to the tune of a dozen+

question: Am I the only one who has collected for almost 5 years (thanks to TRF enabling), has multiple watches he rarely wears, but has never sold, and never dreamed of selling any of them, but now, for the first time is thinking of parting with those not worn often? (even if they are highly collectible)?

I'm willing to bet a handful of folks here share the same experience as you, Tom. At the end of the day, regardless to what you decide, what matters most is that you're happy. You only live once so get yourself exactly what you want.

I wish my timing was as good as yours. I was in that scenario several times over the last 7 years. I traded up a couple times and also pared back several times.

Am in roughly same boat except the desire to part with my watches.

Yes, but for a longer period. Got up to 12 Rolex. Moved some 4 and 5 digit models when the market started to climb. If I would have waited it would have been much more profitable, but that was not my goal. Just had too many and was not wearing the vintage pieces much. Down to 7 between the wife and I. Only thing I may add is a GMT BLRO. If I do I will probably move 1 or 2 more.

Rolex is HOT right now (more than usual) and sellers are demanding a premium for their watches and buyers are paying it for the right watch.

I have 9 and its hard to keep them in rotation. I cant imagine 12+

I would like to get a BLRO as well. I am willing to part with 2...make it 3 of my watches for one.

Really not all that unique when it comes to any hobby or interest. I see this same thread on all the forums for various interests I have. I'm on my fith fairly significant hobby and I have done that with all of them at least once. I have yet to do it multiple times because my experience is that is rather costly. I try to avoid that as much as possible. Generally speaking it's mainly been a part of my learning experience as to what does and does not work best for me. Once I figured it doesn't work and something else does I move on.

In my case I've actually also moved on to other hobbies to avoid getting into the habit of just adding yet another one or reducing and re-growing the collection multiple times. Find what works best and what interest me the most and limit it to those (well sort of) and then move on to other things that interest me as well. Kind of a balance to my unbalanced addictive nature. But I do like the hunt, the search, and the enjoyment one can get from having more than just one interest. I really like this interest but that allows me to enjoy others as well. Besides after awhile for me getting another just isn't quite the special feeling it was previously and that's really no fun. Getting rid of something that's no longer truly enjoyable for me is not a problem either. So far I have no regrets.

I started in 2008 and my collection grew slow and steady way before joining TRF. My problem after joining, was meeting Dr. Tom and moving to PM. I really should sell some and keep telling myself that one has to go for a new one to come in. However, I just can't do it. I'll wait and see what comes out at Basel. If something really cool comes out, I may take the plunge and sell one or two.

When you're The Rock, you can never have enough watches

I sold most of my watches last year (pretty much at a loss) because I wasn't as interested in wearing them anymore and have tried to become more particular in what I buy. Still doesn't help as I have so many I want to own though. If I am not wanting to wear one, or forcing myself to just to justify it, then I normally start thinking of selling it and putting it towards something I would enjoy more.

I've studiously avoided 'collections' all my life BUT I've always thought it would be nice to have a Rolex/equivalent for each day of the week - AND wear each one on it's day religiously. No use having them if you don't wear them.

I have had a similar experience since joining TRF around the same time as you. I got up to 14 watches. I have sold two in the last few months (a bluesy and a DJII) and I am aiming to get down to six over the next year. The problem is which six do I let go

I joined this forum a little over a year ago and went straight to the classifieds section. It took me 6 months to pull the trigger on the perfect OP 39 and since then added 3 more (1 non-Rolex).... I see myself trending that direction as well. Only thing is I think I am going to circulate through watches more often though. Maybe keep a total of 3-4 however now I am wanting to find more and more unique/hard to find pieces.
