Professional line tool watches.

What exactly does that mean? I don't think any professionals use a Rolex as a tool. Much less expensive digital watches would do any job more reliably

Well, back in the day I am pretty sure professionals did use Rolex watches as tools. Nowadays with smartwatch technology, and other instruments, they have more options to choose from.

Yes I agree. However it is the idea that it is a tool for deep sea exploration or whatever that attracts some people to the brand even though they will not use it under water at all. Like the outrage of the new TT SD, people want Rolex to sell tools used as jewellery, not jewellery used as jewellery.

Professional Yacht racers use the YM2 if that counts

But I would say that pilots use the GMT Master as the tool it's meant to be. 3 time zone tracking

I’m a professional airline pilot, and I wear and use my GMT every day at work.

I know folks who have used them in ocean, air, and battlefield environments.

It's all relative to perception / cost.

I consider a custom 1911 a tool and treat it as such, where as some might prefer to spend the money on a modern polymer pistol to serve as the tool.

I use my 116610 as a dive watch ie a tool. It truly is a chameleon of a watch along with the other professional models. You can use it for its intended “professional” use and a night on the town etc..

I look at rolex professional models as something a “bespoke” adventurer/gentleman would use. Yes, there are “better” tools for the job, but nothing that combines classy and tool together. That’s why I like them at least.

I think, today, the term tool watch is used to describe a watch style rather than to describe its purpose. A tool watch is generally SS, was originally conceived to serve a purpose (a bezel, dual time zone, larger hands or whatever), and has no bling.
