Rookie Rolex Q

Hi Guys,

I bought my first Rolex - a really clean 16610 (from 1996) from Bob's watches. The thing is pristine.

2 Questions:

1.) Can I swim with it? Should I be concerned since it is older? Not looking to go diving just typical beach/pool swimming.

2.) How the heck to I post pics of it on here seems like I cant get them to the correct format.

Depends on whether it's been serviced recently. If you're unsure, I'd get it water tested by a watchmaker who may then recommend a full on service. Seals can wear over time, thus making an otherwise waterproof (to 1000 feet/300m) susceptible to water, which is no bueno.

1) Congrats on the 16610 purchase, it's a great watch! I would ask Bob's the last time it was serviced but if they are unsure I would take it to an AD or watch maker for pressure testing. I had my 16710 done just as a precaution.

2) Download the tapatalk app on your phone and it will automatically resize photos for you when you post.

As others have said, make sure it passes a pressure test before venturing into water. It only takes a few minutes, I have mine done every year, just for peace of mind. Well worth the time and money?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new acquisition.

To start, a submariner is a dive watch which is no doubt waterproof and can withstand your standard beating at the pool/beach etc.

HOWEVER. If you do no know the history of the watch, I would have it checked. The seals keep the water out. Those can and will wear with time and can cause problems to your movement. So have it inspected and checked, hopefully it looks just as good on the inside as it does on the outside and you won’t have to worry about it!

For pictures. I started using the Tapatalk app. It was the quickest solution to posting photos.

Just get a pressure check of the watch. Just about any watch retailer or Rolex AD should be able to perform that for you at little to no cost

Just heard from Bob's: The watch was serviced by a certified Rolex service provider and was water tested!

Congrats. Looking forward to seeing some pics!

As others have said it should have no problem being made water resistant to its original rating, just get it pressure checked before taking it in the water.

Do a pressure check once and you're good to go. It's a diver.

I pressure test all my watches and never had one fail.
Seals deteriorating by themselves without being manipulated is something I have not seen yet.
Oldest one is from 1994, never serviced, runs like a charm, never failed a pressure test.

Newer watches have even better quality seals, I would not worry one bit

Here are some photos guys. Im in love. Bobs watches replied and said it was fully serviced and water tested by and authorized Rolex Service provider. Buying with Bobs was a great experience.

If the watch's history is unknown, then a simple pressure test will verify if the watch is still waterproof.
Assuming all is well it should pass a 100m test.

Seals can and do degrade over time and there are seals of varying types located under the Crystal, the Case back and in and around/associated with the Winding crown.
To ensure longevity of your watch and reduce repair costs rinse the watch well under the tap after exposure to salt water or even Chlorinated pool water.
After the water resistance is established/verified. An occassional clean under some running warm water with some dish washing liquid goes a long way to preserving your watch. Agitation with an old soft toothbrush helps generate plenty of bubbles to aid in cleaning in and around the crevices.
