1st ever try
I just got back from Iraq for a short break so went to greys market in London and tried a 2003 sub date and GMT coke 2008. This is the 1st time ever that I tried a Rolex on. I was thinking about getting a sub for the past 3 month ever since I joined this forum and was very excited. They both looked rather small and fragile maybe due to the fact that my normal going out watch is a 50mm U-boat. Both watches looked amazing and I know tomo I'm gone go back and get 1 but which? The asking price for sub is 2750 sterling and the GMT coke was few hundreds more. Do I get the 2003 sub date and then wait for ceramic TT gmt to come out or get the coke and get the ceramic sub date when that comes out?

The gmt coke is a 2008 but the only sub I could find 2nd hand was a 2003 sub date. To be honest I rather not buy brand new as I'm taking it away with me. I'm only in London for a week so need to get it before I head back to the desert. I did see a gmt II c but Not to keen on colour.

Go for the 16710. You can pick a sub up later and with your travels I think it would be of more use to you.

GMT II 16710! Very versatile and practical! I'm a huge sub fan too so would recommend you grab one in the future if you can!

IMO no question get the 16710 while you can, you'll only regret it later down the line

Welcome home Alphamale
I would go for the Sub Date now because it's the definitive Rolex and the re-designed Sub does not, to my eyes, look anything like a classic Sub. Then get the new GMTIIc when (hopefuly) it comes out. If you do it the other way around - great, you can't loose realy. Good luck and safe return.

I must say that coke looked real good and its a 2008 model. So right now I'm leaning toward that 1. Will take my lady along so she can see which looks better

Did you try on the gmt-c? A bit more $ but after the u-boat it would not feel as small as the coke. either way though

i'd go with the sub: triplock crown, thicker/more water resistant case, bullet proof calibre 3135. unless you really need the gmt function.

Get the GMT. It will do all the Sub can and more, and will be a lot more comfortable on those hot, sandy desert days.
While you're at it, you might think about picking up a black NATO strap from Timefactors. Perfect combination for the desert.

I have the black and red GMT, also from 2008. These are much harder to get hold of than the Sub so I would get one of these. They still make the Sub but the last GMTs ran out at the start of 2008 in the UK.

Also most of the watches sold on here are from the USA and you can get stung for import duty.

I love the look of the Coke (very Magnum P.I.), but my only complaint w/ the GMT's is the fact that the bezel does not have a lumed pearl. I use the hell out of the Subs bezel for timing things (even in low light/dark settings). Something to think about. Good luck & thanks for serving. Cheers. |
