Advice for first Rolex Buy please help.

I recently have decided to buy My first Rolex of my own and have settled on a submariner. I wear the Daytona 116523 two tone my father left me every day but it turns quite a few heads and some people look at it and I have to walk a little faster if you know what I mean. I have decided to treat myself and have started looking at subs. Should I buy vintage or new? Which reference numbers are the best and most collectible? Are the new ceramic Bezels really the huge improvement over the aluminum as they advertise? Where should I get one given dealers are always dry? Thanks all!

Yes ceramic is better. Grey market is your best bet. Any trusted seller on this forum should do. You have 2 options, green or black. The hulk is much more expensive.

You will find a mix of answers. Personally I am not big on vintage. I prefer to put my own Milage on. That does leave 5 digit option open for discussion. Since you currently don’t have a date, that might be a nice complication to add. So 16610 or 116610. Again I prefer ceramic but I also have a black bay 58 which wears smaller when I’m in the mood for that look.

Get 116610 if you like the modern ceramic look, larger and more substantial heft.

Get 16610 if you want an understated and lighter watch, with classic proportions, look and feel.

If money not an issue, go smurf!!

Quit feeding the grey market. You could get discounts even last year on Stainless Steel models from an AD. Let that grey market fizzle then flame out completely with its inflated price rubbish. The grey market is only worth buying from when the prices are LOWER than an Authorized Dealer. (AD for short for those who don't yet know.)

I just purchased (2) Submariners from AD's the in the past...wait for it......wait for it.....LESS THAN TWO WEEKS! They are out there if you do your due diligence. Unfortunately though I actually paid MSRP, but its MUCH better then the fools errand of paying over! Money doesn't buy class, health, character, nor salvation. Lastly, a well dressed idiot is just that.

Aren’t you worried the Submariner will also turn heads? It is one of the most recognisable watches in the world after all. Ceramic is better, the colour won’t fade and it is scratch resistant.

You can easily get SubC Date in AD.
It will give you:
1. Peace of mind (for beginners gray market could be uneasy)
2. MSRP ($1000 cheaper than gray)
3. Full period warranty card
Approximate time is around 3-4 weeks.

The most difficult part is to find AD that let you be in that short waiting list without prior purchase.
I had 3 local ADs in my area, 2 of them didn't let me in their waiting list. One of them did and delivered in 3 1/2 weeks.

If you are looking at getting a sub to collect; Get a 16610LV (Kermit) 50th Anniversary. If you are looking for a daily a modern 116610LN (date) or 114060 (no date) are readily available via Grey; Or get on your local AD wait list.

Try the 5 digit models and current models on and decide which you like best. If you decide on a 5 digit model buy from a trusted seller on this forum or if you like the current models you can go either trusted seller or AD. Use WatchRecon to search for watches for sale by private parties.

For the sake of clarity, I'd like to personally address your comments to my post.

a.) Judgmental - I was judging no one regarding anything in my post, how that was deduced I'm not sure. That being said, part of the sequence of logic in sound financial management, as well as economics is one does not frivolously over pay for something that is not truly rare. Our governments in each of our respective countries do quite enough of that in their procurement items from offices to military spending, and we should learn from their mistakes hopefully. There is no scarcity for these models in the true sense of the word. If we were discussing a non-current production of very limited quantities, historical artwork, vehicles, or even antiquities that is a whole other subject. These watches are easily available for any man or woman who desires one if they are simply willing to invest time, make some phone calls, or even exploit connections to do so. But wasting money is indeed a fools errand. Think of Notre Dame; how many hundreds of millions poured out to fund a bloody BUILDING (noted it is certainly of historical value), but yet there are humanitarian injustices allowed to happen with all the homeless people in the same city....where a mere couple million would go an incredible distance in helping to address that dilemma and provide tangible solutions. If that is not placing value on objects over people, I don't know what is. If you want judgmental, look at the tight wads who only open the coffers to infuse gobs of cash for something that's going to burn again in the end, rather than help their fellow citizens or neighboring country folks. However, calling me judgmental for telling people not to feed an abusive market practice is entirely incorrect, common sense should be more common in not overpaying though. However for the grey market sellers, it is 100% their right under the wonderful system of capitalism; just don't feed the beast. Just because you can, does not mean you should.

b.) B for boastful; how ironic and fitting actually. I do see how someone, (you in this case) could possibly misinterpret my sharing of some recent acquisitions as vaguely boastful, and I assure you that was not my intention. My intention was to encourage people to maximize their finances by not overspending, and assuring them with current and factual information that yes, there are Stainless Steel Sports Models available from AD's, and should they do their part as I said previously, they will enjoy getting one or more for themselves also. Which is why I said specifically I had bought (2) Submariners, (the OP's watch of interest) as many happen upon only one here and there, and I wanted (2) and purchased that quantity, and I also got an Air-King to boot. There are PLENTY of watches available after I did my due diligence. Sub, Daytona, Yacht Master, Air-King, Sea Dweller, Deep Sea, Sky Dweller, Explorer (both styles), Milgauss...I purchased what I wanted, and turned down a LOT more. Less than 2 weeks ago for all of this. Nothing boastful at all from me. There are folks here dropping pictures of multiple pieces all the time which are far more brag worthy then a couple of Subs. I will add though, that I've not noticed you commenting to the intentions of many of those posts, however....just an observation.

Lastly, I'm glad I could clear that up for you though. Enjoy your reading and time on these forums. There is a lot of good information and advise amidst some hogwash. Eat the meat, throw out the bones.

I am new to the Rolex/watch scene. The average person can not tell the difference between a Omega, Seiko, Tudor or a Rolex much less a Sub vs. GMT. If someone recognizes your wearing a Rolex it's because they admire watches, imo. I have been studying these watches for 5 months now and I still can't tell what type of watch is on someone's wrist. They all look like they could be expensive watches. A friend's father was wearing fake bluesy and I had to hold it in my hand to realize it was fake.
