Hah! I'll admit, I often scan rooms for what people are wearing. I think it speaks to their priorities. As a millennial (I'm 31), I can say I am less attached to my iPhone than I am to any of my watches. I feel very "naked" if I'm not wearing a watch of some kind.

To the OP, I hope the food was good at the cookout! Here's a question: Do English people's cookouts have the same "fixin's" that traditional American cookouts have? Baked beans, macaroni salad, fruit bowl, etc? Just one of those random thoughts...

Before anybody mentions pocket-watches, you can’t signal your status or your membership of a club (the WIS club in this case) with something that is invisible to the outside world 99% of the time.
Excellent observation

The food and drinks were great! The “sides” consisted of a salad bowl/corn on the cobs/jacket potatoes/cheese. No fruit though, probably a far too healthy option for the day! The mains were standard BBQ fare; burgers, sausages, kebabs, chicken & some fish, and plenty of beer.

There were also some veggie burgers/sausages etc; if you were that way inclined

Glad to hear that despite our physical separation, we still enjoy the same activity of standing around making small talk in someone else's backyard With all of those sides, I'd definitely need to pop another notch in the belt when I got home. Enjoy your day, Mike, knowing you had the coolest watch there & your belly is full.

I’m not sure that a garden party is the best place to canvas people’s watch wearing preferences. I’ll bet that a number of the attendees only wear watches during work hours.

Why wouldn’t the gold watch be ok for a European BBQ ? (Assuming you’d brought a few with you on the trip)

Hahaha this is a valid question. I have no idea why it wouldn't be ok? Do you reserve YG for North America, PT for South America, SS for Asia? That will be a very expensive collection just to attend these worldwide backyard cookouts.

You don't see too many people wearing classy watches anymore, but when you do it looks damn good!

I hope we get a genuinely sensible answer too as I am curious !

Perhaps a perception that YG may be considered crass in some circles in Europe where ostentatiousness could be less the norm. This is just a guess though so keep an open mind on it.

Depending on the setting 9 times out of 10 YG in the UK on men is considered crass and or tacky. It’s a shame as a YG sub is my grail. I would definitely feel comfortable wearing it in Asia or parts of the USA.

People who partake in that sort of thing have no place at a BBQ. My BBQ refuses to cook tofu

You’re calling the Apple Watch a pointless gimmick? Big words. It’s saved thousands of lives in a single J&J program. That just one program.

I personally used to hate the apple watch, i find it pointless etc, UNTIL my other half bought me the apple watch 4 for my birthday last monthand you know what? it gets more wrist time than my BLNR

I think you have to play with it to really let it settle on you, just like the more i look at the rainbow daytona the more i start to think its actually a really beautiful watch LOL

but then again i would be too busy stuffing my face and downing beer, how do you even manage to get the time to look at peoples watches

Well of course it was! It was in England, not Kansas City or Memphis.

Just don't like wearing high-end (/flashy) watches around Europe. If I was going to take a watch with me it'd be my 8 year old AP ROO that's been beaten to death (retired).

At any gathering such as a BBQ, if I'm not up to the chat, it'd be something low-key or nothing. I hate the small-talk of "what I do, how I make my money" etc. Done too many of those.

Unfortunately I'll be picking up a 5711/1R and Summer has hit Europe. I'll be sweating my arse off wearing long sleeves in 30C.

Certainly in many parts of Europe to enquire about the finances of others would be exceptionally rude and poor form - it may be thought however, but not said. At least not in polite company.

5711R is a splendid piece ! Enjoy wearing it but don’t hide it from the rare sunshine over here.

The thing is being English we wouldn't discuss those things......
We would discuss the weather and how bad the traffic is on the M6 roadworks.
Nothing too controversial - that's the rules.

Next you'll be suggesting you get asked such brazen questions while wearing a flash Rolex watch!

I was only suggesting it’s gimmicky when I assume most people also have a smart phone in their pocket too....whats a j and j program

I see the same. One thing I gather from these types of posts is also the context. Where there are time sensitive things going, people tend to wear a watch. For example on the floor of the stock exchange or military base, a convention center with business meetings...all those people mentioned at the F1 circuit have jobs or possible obligations and places to be or maybe sponsored to be there and wear something.

However, where there are leisure activities present like a bbq, playground with the kids, or the beach, you won't see many because it's chillax time.

That's because we have the class system, don't perpetuate it by serving it. One of the good things about SM is establishing a newer younger aristocracy, which is basically making everyone new money again and free to wear what they want, not what they should want.

And this program not available for non-US customers who paid the same money but living in other countries

This is very true I do actually recall numerous discussions regarding the weather, “it’s been very wet...now it is too hot etc:” and traffic jams
