Did I just get lucky?

I am a new member here so please forgive me if I may have missed this.

A little over a year ago I randomly walked into a Wempe in NYC. I wasn't looking to purchase a watch, heck I was barely thinking about buying a watch. After looking at what was on display (I don't remember what was there exactly), I loved the Sub No date 114060 and at the urging of my fiance she bought it right then and there as a "wedding gift" to me.

Now, as I have recently gotten into watches and Rolexs in particular I see all this information about shortages for SS sports models however, I randomly walked into a AD and got one. Is the 114060 not considered to be in the shortage? Did I just get lucky? Thanks everyone.

I’d say you were in the right place, at the right time.

You got lucky! Congrats on your second 114060

I was hoping for a better story...

Yes, right place, right time. I would say you're lucky to have such a wonderful partner, a watch is just a watch.

While not the most difficult to get amongst the SS, it's definitely not something you should expect to walk in and find.

I'd say you got lucky, although things have gotten even worse since then. Congrats and pics or it didn't happen.

Me too. BUT, if I can entertain you:

Last year I was at Tourneau on 42nd street and an Asian girl (low 20's) walked in saying she wanted a gift for her boyfriend. She then showed the saleswoman a picture of a Batman. I laughed internally (of course there was nothing on display).

I have no idea what happened, but 5 minutes later there she was, holding the GMT on one hand and a credit card on the other, completely oblivious to the fact that she got extremely lucky. I never really cared for the Batman (IMHO no one really did so much until this last Basel and the current state of things), so didn't think about asking if they had another one...

The way you wrote your last sentence it seems like you walked in again and got yourself another one. I didn't read it that way, but I think he did.

What do you think. If you are into Rolex, you already know the answer. To make you feel lucky, yes, you were lucky.

Maybe my girlfriend can learn whatever sorcery that girl used to open the vaults.

Being asian is not sorcery. It just opens many doors.

Sorry to hear that. There is a perception that asians are rich. My wife gets it all the time. I have benifited from it, too.

I'm just messing around, I totally understand what you're saying. I'm pretty low key so people don't think I'm wealthy (which is relative. And relatively speaking, I'm not).

In general, I think Asian girls benefit more from this than guys do. When it comes to luxury goods. But luxury cars? I've had some (Asian girl) friends get fleeced!

Indeed, you had very good luck! You do hear stories of folks w/o purchase histories at ADs having good beginner's luck, but generally it has become progressively harder to aquire Rolex professional models as we all know here. Nice that your spouse supported the purchase. Continue to enjoy your Submariner in good health. Cheers!

Consider yourselves lucky if you can land a SS sport watch! And you hit the lottory if it's a SS Daytona or SS BLRO.

Luck is the residue of design! Wempe is a first class AD with a super long list of clients after any SS piece let alone a Sub.

Congrats and be thankful. Wear it in good health!
