Advice for first AD purchase

Hi guys,

I managed to hunt down a dj41 and will be picking it up from the ad later this week. Total was around 10k with taxes.

Just a question, I have no purchase history with this AD, however I would like to eventually purchase a SS Daytona (don’t mind waiting 3-5 years).

Would it be reasonable for me to express interest in the Daytona when I pick up my Dj if I tell them I don’t mind waiting for however long it takes? I know it’s a long shot but you never know.

Once the Submariner gets an update I am planning to pick that up as well if I have the chance along the way.

Any advice is appreciated!

My advice is not to buy the DJ. Seems you are only doing so to get a Daytona or sub.

Better just to get a sub from them.

And unless you are very lucky it charming, you won't see a Daytona.

No I actually want the Dj as I feel the dj41 is pretty much a refined and updated product. I want to add a Submariner later on to my collection

I'm getting a YM blue dial from my AD later in the evening and it's my first one from them. My friend is interested in a TT Daytona which she has on hand as well but my friend is kind enough to have this tagged to my profile.

I have a few other friends who are interested in other two tone models and I'm looking to get this for them. My grail would be a Hulk and Pepsi eventually but I will not mention to her later in the evening yet till further purchaes.

Yes, absolutely express interest, and make sure to let the manager or owner know exactly that. Your salesperson might not be there six months from now.

Hearsay - most ADs in our area are limiting 1 professional model to a client per year. If your friend get it under your name, it may impact your own professional model waitlist. You are so lucky, I am waiting lists and heard nothing :(

No harm in asking, you never know your luck!

Congrats on the DJ.

If you don’t ask, you definitely won’t get a Daytona.

Reasonable but prepare for the fact that VIPs always jump “lists” and you will likely never get one

SS Daytonas are most definitely reserved for big spending VIP clients. A DJ and a Sub is about 100k of junk away from a SS Daytona.

+1

You should absolutely tell your AD that you want to be on the list for SS Daytona, but just trying to set expectations, that it might be no or if you do get on it could WAY longer than 3-5 years!

Unfortunately, it'll probably take more than DJ and Sub to get you a SS Daytona or even on a list. Especially in NY. Remember the NYC clientele: famous and wealthy celebrities, trust fund kids, uber rich NY families, and wall street bankers/lawyers. These people have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and many in the millions. For example, i was just in the store last month and someone dropped $150k on 3 watches

Think about how many of those people want a SS Daytona and are already on the list. I know my AD in NY has list that is 400+ and closed. Assuming they get 12 per year, which would be a lot, that's 30+ years

Also, if a new Sub comes to market, how many people and VIPs do you think will want Rolex's new icon? How many years will you wait for that one?

Anything can happen and you can luck out but like i said trying to set expectations, especially in NY

(i believe you posted about and are aware that Sub wait lists are in the years. If you know that think about how many years it will take for the SS Daytona (prob one of 3 or 4 hottest watches on the planet))

nowhere near $100k; received my SS daytona white dial 18 months after beginning to purchase watches from my guy. all of my rolexes come from one AD with the exception of my first. clearly the total value isn’t anywhere close to $100k, but i have a daytona on my wrist right now.

OP; express interest. but if you want to be honest with yourself, if a new sub drops at basel, neither you nor I will see one for a while.

I agree. But don’t start buying a bunch of jewelry just to get in the good favor of this AD. You never know what the future holds, and there are no guarantees that you’ll get the Rolex you want.

I was offered a black dial 2 years ago from a AD that I've purchased nothing from.

All I did was send watches through him to the RSC for 10 years and spoke about watches.

I didn't take it because I'm not flipper and I wanted a white dial. I got it a year later from another AD where my previous purchase was only a BLNR.

Point is, you are kidding yourself and digging a hole if you think that anything but spend makes a difference. It's more about being authentic to the AD.

Absolutely ask. You have a better chance than some guy walking in off the street. And you'll be in the forefront of their minds, versus some guy who got on the list 3 years ago and probably moved by now.

Congrats too on the new DJ!

Unfortunately for Daytona there is no list so anything they do say will be purely lip service

I’m pretty sure most AD’s are able to spot flippers from collectors like yourself. So just show them you’re interested and tell them you don’t mind waiting a few years.
Good luck and congrats w/ the DJ!
