Random ?s re Tiffany, “XLARGE,” Mosaic
I was browsing through the Christie’s auction ending tomorrow, and have a few random questions for you sages ...
I’ve seen it mentioned here that, without a Tiffany receipt, a Tiffany stamp is, to some extent, disregarded and assumed to be a later addition. This one from Christie’s says it comes with no papers, but - Does it coming from Christie’s serve (or even help) to authenticate it as a genuine Tiffany co-branded Rolex? (Looking through their descriptions makes me wonder if it should, lots of errors there - They describe a linen bezel on an 1811 as “bark,” they describe 182xx DDs as “double-click” rather than double quick, they list a no-quick 18038 as “double-click,” etc.) . This 34mm 1972 Air King is marked “XLARGE,” which I’ve not seen before. Was this also done on other models? Were standard Air Kings smaller than 34mm in 1972? Or is this something else entirely, like the Domino’s-marked Rolexes, from some company called XLARGE? (That font doesn’t look like something Rolex would use.) . Finally, this 1978 Date model’s dial is described as “gray mosaic.” This thread (https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...ghlight=Mosaic) also calls them “shantung” dials. I like the look and the color variety of these - Were they ever used on contemporaneous Day-Dates? Any other info on this type of mosaic/shantung dial? . |
