Rolex Deepsea quick story

A driver in an ice cream truck stopped at light and asks about my car. Then he proceeded to ask me about my watch, a Tudor GMT, then he flashes his watch at me, I said "oh nice you got a sub". He says "it's a deepsea." I give him a thumbs up and I drive away.

In that moment, I wonder if I chose the wrong profession.

You’re in the right profession. Your car is cooler than his ice cream truck and we can’t be sure if his Deepsea is genuine or not. Not saying it’s impossible. Maybe he’s the owner of the business and loves to put smiles on kids faces.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that... it being a mobile freezer and all

You win. There’s no way OPs car can be cooler...unless he’s driving a bigger, badder ice cream truck

How old was he? Maybe he did something else before and made it and now is living out his life doing a job that doesn't require much brain power.

That's my goal in life when I retire. Go do something that doesn't require me to do a lot of thinking. Something in the service industry maybe. I think there are times I could do a better job than some servers and maybe that's what i'll do in retirement to bring total satisfaction to people with great service while they enjoy their meal.

I know a guy who had a senior vp job, was very successful, retired, and now works at Ace Hardware helping people with paint cause its easy, brainless (for most part), but more importantly, he enjoys it.

I'm in NYC, so it was your typical NY ice cream truck. The man looked to be in his late 30s to mid 40s.

Anything is possible - you work hard at your job and save up to afford your timepieces. It was definitely not your typical acenario.

Yea all those things are possible, I'm just sharing my unexpected NYC encounter. There are more questions than answers.

It's a nifty world. I encounter this quite a bit in Southeast Asia. People who dress poorly wear gold Rolexes. An expat friend working in property development in Hong Kong said it used to surprise him, but he learned not to judge by appearance or circumstance. He learned that the old barber who shaves him owns the building in which his shop is located. He knows that building's ground lease is worth well over USD100,000,000.

To be honest, a deepsea is not that unaffordable.

Agreed. Someone who buys a pack of cigarettes a day, and 2 cases of beer a week for 2 years, could’ve had a deep sea instead.

There is an ethnic store (Armenian/Mediterranean) that I drive halfway across town every month or two to get my fix of sausages and curries. The people who run it are a couple in their 60’s I would guess. Extremely nice people who always make pleasant conversations and ask about my mom and my kids. I was pleased to see recently that hubby had a DSSD and wifey had a Sub.

I have a few nice watches and drive a 911 turbo and amg truck. Sometimes I also have to get down and dirty and drive an old van or work on something myself...work gloves over an SD43. I actually enjoy seeing the typical NYC city dwellers look down upon me when I’m in work gear, which happens quite often...one thing I learned is to not judge a book by its cover. The ice cream truck guy might own a whole territory and had to operate the truck himself that particular day. Could have a Ferrari in his 5 car garage. Or maybe he is just a watch fanatic and saved up for the deep sea. Either way, good for him!

I never really understood the people who buy deep sea. Its bulky and really ment for deep sea diving. Then again I do respect the fact people buy it because they love the look or the history behind it.

Because I would wear a platona but it looks like a woman’s watch on me. It is also the most true to tool watch Rolex still makes. Have had both the old and new version and the updated version is considerably more comfortable. It has become my daily beater while a few of my other watches are being serviced.
