For a true beater a g-shock works. As for a nicer beater, I'd get a domestic market seiko or citizen. Or maybe a tissot or hamilton.

I'd like to spend nothing, Well no more than $1000 street price.

I prefer 39-44mm but not too thick such as a Luminor or DSSD.

I appreciate all suggestions.

I would strongly recommend either Fortis (there are many models in that price range, and you can`t miss with any of them) or Longines Hydroconquest automatic (which is really great bang for buck).

I'm also looking for suggestions for one for my husband. He has a TT/black Sub that was a gift from his father. He does a lot of things at work where a really nice Rolex shouldn't go. He is interested in a Marathon. Any suggestions for dealers?

Until a watch carries some sort of automatic movement or even quartz with wheels activated hands you can't really call it a beater.
Those that say " oh...I really use my Submariner to do everything " are just missing it. Working around the house or strolling on the beach is something every watch can do. But if you're after wood splitting, mountainbiking, paddling in the amazon river with a newly carved canoe there's only one watch out there that can do the job : it's called Casio Gshock.
Ok,you need something not as kiddish as a regular Gshock ?? Get yourself a nice 100% Japan made,Japan sold only G Shock GW5000 1Jf. It will cost you around 500USD with shipping and everything but once you put it on you'll find yourself leaving your beloved automatics in the safe.

Here is my weekend watch - quartz so I can grab it and go without winding it up or setting it. Rugged, water resistant to 300 meters, fixed bars so it only works with a NATO or similar strap. About $500-$550 depending on the value of the dollar compared to the UK pound. The stainless version is a bit less, the stainless automatic version a good bit more. Also pictured is my now-flipped auto version, it was too much trouble to set every weekend so I let it go.

I've got to agree. There are degrees of beaters. I'd take my Sea-Dweller anywhere for an adventure (and do), but if I was going into war, splitting my own fire wood and hacking my own kayak out of some amazon or Pacific island hardwood, the choice is clear. It has to be quartz, digital, and solar powered is a big plus.
I don't like the "modern" over the top style of the G's. This is the best "real" beater money can buy:
