Icon20 Suggestions for a beater.

Merry Xmas,

I'm in need of a watch I don't need to worry about scratching/banging. It can be quartz (please pardon as I know it's considered a watch w/o a soul).

I'd like to spend nothing, Well no more than $1000 street price.

I prefer 39-44mm but not too thick such as a Luminor or DSSD.

I appreciate all suggestions.

Why have a beater? Either you have a watch you can wear, use and enjoy or you don't need to know the time...seems pretty simple.

My beater is a 16610

PS~ back in the day my kin folk looked at the sun to tell time and my grand daddy could come within 15 minutes to half and hour just by looking up

From what I've read about the Seiko Monster SKX 779 it seems to be a good beater and it only cost less than $200.

casio g-shock.....best bang for the buck. for $1k you are going to be priced out of most watches that get discussed on this forum.

I wear my 16610 every day. But if something expendable is called for, why not a Luminox, possibly an SS model? Just a suggestion...

Out of curiosity, what watch are you trying to "protect" by subbing in a beater, and are you mostly worried about loss, damage or theft?

Some that might work for you are:

http://www.authenticwatches.com/8384.html

http://www.authenticwatches.com/8593.html

http://www.authenticwatches.com/hami...h70455133.html

http://www.authenticwatches.com/oris...5784064mb.html

I'm not a fan of buying watches online, but in my experience their prices reflect "street" price pretty accurately.

How do you define "a beater" and what are you looking for?

If it's an every day wearer, then if it's not vintage, they're all everyday wearers...life is too short for them to be anything else. My 16613 is my beater.

If by a beater, you mean a watch that you are going to abuse (i.e. scrape regularly) then why not get a timex and set your limit at $100 rather than A $1000 to wear when doing such activities?....or if you want to spend a bit more you could get a Citizen or a Seiko...or you could just use your cell phone for the time when engaged in such activities.

I work in Waste Management & Construction.

Although I'm a Projects Manager I regularly 'get my hands dirty' & my watches get banged, scraped, chipped, scratched, abused & even quite literally covered in oil, grease, rubbish & sh*t on a regular basis.

I don't want to have to worry about taking off either of my £5,000 watches before I dive in when one of my team needs a hand; & that's why I personally wear 'beaters'.

Absolutely agreed.

I have a Black Monster that I wear daily now & an Orange Monster sitting in it's box awaiting my birthday in April.
(It's going to be my 'Summer Beater'. )

MSAR you can't go wrong with this one for a beater that works great. Got one for a relative at Westcoastime.com & they were great to deal with.

Limes Endurance 1Tausend with or without the GMT feature. TON of watch for the price and one of the thinnest 1000m watches you'll find.

I don't want to wear a Sub C in certain locations or doing repairs around the house.

I appreciate some of the suggestions.

Marathon is pretty hard to beat, in all their current configurations, both automatic and quartz. Built originally for Canadian SAR and now also US military contracts, virtually bulletproof, very well finished. Around $700 on rubber strap, add $200 for SS bracelet. Great bang for the buck.

Just curious, when did they stop making that watch? Always thought it died prematurely.

I'd go with a Seiko auto. I have a couple but I wear a No date sub 14060 on a nato as a "beater". I can't do anything to it that can't be fixed and it's insured with a 0 deductable if it gets lost or damaged so I don't really worry.

I purchased a Seiko Black Monster in July 2010 for use as a beater when outdoors hunting, fishing, cutting wood, butchering deer, trapping, etc. To date, the watch is in great condition after some legitimate abuse. My vote, Seiko. Good luck!

With all due respect, you don't need a beater. You need a sh*tter.

Or you could just throw caution to the wind and do something like this:
