I actually think this is a great question, besides we are comparing Rolex and Grand Seiko (although the regular Seiko brand is quite good as well).

This is a really difficult choice in my opinion. Both watches are really great. The DateJust is a superb piece and is the obvious default choice. The Seiko is the more interesting, however. I have handled a Snowflake and I was totally blown away by the quality and the breathtaking dial. The blued seconds hand is a beautiful touch. The ultra-light construction is amazing. The Spring Drive movement is arguably the very best mechanical watch technology ever devised. Honestly, if it was my choice, I really don't know what I would do. I think the decision will come down to how much the Seiko's quality and unique features move you. And is that enough to overcome your respect for the Rolex brand.

The Zaratsu polishing technique alone is amazing. The Grand Seiko is truly a masterpiece. I would love to own one someday.

The snowflake dial is gorgeous and distinctive but the hands - not so much.
I would say only go GS if you are intrigued by the line. If not DJII. I have a vintage 1967 Seiko mechanical that beats at 36,000 bph and it is mesmerizing. Most current GSs are 28800 bph unless you go all the way in with the Anniversary Edition. It is my second favorite watch I have owned. Fit and finish are nice and it is below the GS series. |

My vote goes to the GS Snowflake. This is coming from a guy that loves the DJ II.
Not my pic.

Regarding the dial:
"Suwa is almost dead center in the middle of Japan, and because of this, the humidity level is lower than in other parts of the country. Because of this lower humidity, the snow fall during the winter is very light and airy. This allows the wind to sculpt the snow lying on the ground to make beautiful patterns. They set out to create a dial which resembled this light snow fall and patterns. In this, the SBGA011 Grand Seiko “Snowflake” was born. It is a unique 6 step process to replicate the snowfall in the dial. While the most complex dial in the Grand Seiko line takes 12 steps to complete, this “Snowflake” still one of the most intricate dials in the series" http://forums.watchuseek.com/f21/gra...11-572136.html |

You can put lip stick on a pig....(pause) but its still a pig.
It's like puttin a corvette engine in a Pontiac. At the end of the night, you are not going to pick up chicks. Buy the Rolex.. And drive the corvette |

Besides, perhaps the OP doesn't want to buy a Rolex just to "pick up chicks", he's just torn between two timepieces with reliable, tough and great movements.

Your Wisdom is parallel to none.. It is a great watch, not going to argue that. But at a certain price point... Nothing beats rolex.. I would buy the following
AP, Hublot, Patek, Cartier only in 18k. However, only rolex gives you a crown and everyday " I am King" Rolex, fanatic |

Why did I buy my DDII from AD and spend so much money on a timepiece??
Because its a rolex... No other reason. Any timex quartz will keep accurate time and on schedule... I'm just saying |

Just as i would pick Mercedes-Benz over Lexus, i pick Rolex over Seiko. DJII for me, no doubt in my mind.
