My platinum daytona has some minor scratches one the PCLs other than that it's been great and possibly better than the SS watches. I love mine.

I think platinum is actually more corrosion-resistant than stainless steel...

Tom, you are making me feel VERY wimpy... In Aruba currently and using my G shock for the beach activities, Sub at night... Keep the pictures coming!
In terms of platinum, my wedding ring is holding up great after almost nine years! |

So Gentlemen....I gather from this thread that the consensus is that platinum holds up well against thorough daily use. Can anybody comment on WG please? ....seriously considering the BLRG....

Platinum is one of the most durable alloys available and is EXTREMELY durable - probably the MOST durable precious metal around. It is definitely harder than gold therefore More likely to bend vs break (which is why a lot of stone settings are set in platinum). One of the common misconceptions about platinum is that people tend to correlate durability and scratch resistance and you can't really do that. ANY And EVERY metal is susceptible to wear and scratching. Some merely handle it better in terms of wear -- like platinum. Does that make it better? Well...that really just depends on your perspective.
Now...having said that...platinum Daytonas are GORGEOUS. period. :) |

There are a couple of posters who claim that platinum watches are flawed because the case back and threaded case gall (cold weld), but I think that is really rare otherwise why do big time makers continue to use Platinum? Also, if that happened in an RSC, I think they would replace it free.
I would have one serviced by an RSC or skilled tech, nonetheless. |

950 Pt has Vickers hardness of 80-135HV depending on the 5% alloy.
By contrast, 316L SS is 140HV. So yes, SS is harder than Pt but not by much. |
