This thread seems to indicate there's a large gray area that exists between dinging or putting one's Rolex in danger during the course of one's spy job that necessitates swan-diving from the superstructure of a smuggler's ship to intercept and engage a sinister frogman who's absconding with stolen secret nuclear detonator plans towards a waiting submarine and the first spear fired from his speargun wings it, Vs. using it and iron skillets to play a game of paddle-Rolex with a friend on a crowded beach while a 3rd tries to knock it out of the air mid-arc with thrown hammers.

Gosh, if only someone would invent a device that we could input all other, less readily-apparent situations and damage/dings that (or could) occur for objective analysis and a readout be given somewhere on a scale between "Honorable Activity/Righteous Battle Wound" and "Breathtakingly Stupid/Unnecessary Abuse".

If invented, the Poser 3000 detection unit would come in pretty handy during these TRF court-martials.

Take it off next time. Having a beautiful watch that can handle difficult situations is one thing but needlessly abusing it is another.

Perhaps, but I think of it like gardening in a William Fioravanti suit and a nice pair of Ferragamo shoes.

This thread makes me wish the last time I gutted a deer wearing a Rolex I would've taken a wrist shot to contribute. Maybe next time, and wearing a DD because if Red Adair can fight oil rig fires wearing one I'm sure it'll be more than okay.

This is right. If you have to take your watch off to live your life as you see fit whats the point. Just get rid of the thing. These are not priceless pieces of art work, they're just gears encased in steel, gold and/or platinum. Abuse, use or pamper as you wish, either way is not going to mater much. It's a depreciating asset you lost resale value the second the cashier gave you a receipt, a scratch here or there is going to change this fact.

The good news is that NOTHING is stopping you guys from doing just that. I'll give $100 to each of your guys favorite charity if you post a video of your most expensive Rolex being dragged down a concrete street bouncing up and down. You see you could bypass all this BS and go straight for the end result you both seem to admire so much.

This absolutely has to be a combination of macho BS and a wealth gap. Nothing else makes sense. If a $13,000 watch to you is like $50 to me then beating the crap out of it, and that not bothering you makes sense. There still has to be a macho aspect to it because I am friends with some very wealthy people that do not abuse their luxury items like this. NO this it not what these watches are made for. At the end of the day it's your property and you can do anything you want with it. If anyone does this with a Patek I will publically accuse you of being insane.

Brett I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one, as for myself, I don't purposely try and abuse anything and I am not macho or wealthy, just a hard worker

but this makes me think of my friends that own Porsches and think I am crazy to race mine cause it might hurt them or mark them up, same thing

I think you are the nicest and coolest guy on this forum Tom. To me racing Porsche built to be raced and subjecting a Rolex to indiscriminate damage are two different things. Let's just agree to disagree.

PS- you by far have the best pictures here. Thanks!!!

thanks Brett and I really don't think we "disagree" I think it is more like semantics. I think you may be considering people doing stuff with the watch on in harms way and "purposely abusing their Rolex" as the same thing when actually it is two different things

I have never really seen anyone on this forum or anywhere purposely abuse their watch, that really would be just foolish!

Need to meet up and do lunch sometime, we are fellow Tampons!

Moved house recently wearing my Bremont S2000…

Heaving furniture about and squeezing through doorways etc.

Left lots of gouges on the doorframes, just wiped the paint and wood off the watch!

I can see both sides of this, everyone uses their things in their own way, having saved for a long while to get my watches I take them off if I'm doing anything that 'may' cause damage.

Horses for courses though.

Gardening in a Sub, yes. Gardening in a PP Calatrava, no. People obviously care for their watches, I get that. But what's the point of buying something so it sits in the box or a bank vault and never gets worn? That's more of a waste of money IMHO.

You just jumped to the opposite extreme. What makes you think you cannot wear a luxury watch all day long without subjecting it to something like gardening that one would only do for a few hours on the weekend? I manage to wear all of my Rolexes, Omega's and JLC's in a wonderfully orchestrated rotation that does not subject them to the manual labor is that I enjoy on the weekends. I hunt fish and do shooting sports. I would never wear my Grand Reverso in a tree stand with my compound bow. Just like I would not wear my nice pair of $600 Ferragamo shoes camping.
