I have a friend who hemmed and hawed for a year over a Panerai. Finally got one - rarely wears it. He says he wants to "protect his investment"
For the love of god. |

I originally wanted a Rolex for the simple reason that my dad wore one. I wore the TTDJ for over ten years before getting another watch.
I now appreciate Rolex for a lot of things. Conservative, reliable, classic and timeless. Just like my dad! |

I would say that MOST people I know at least with a Rolex are not into watches. They buy it for a status symbol or a symbol of career success or something like that.
At least two guys I know bought Submariners and have no idea at all the concept of mechanical wristwatches and have taken their watches back or came to me saying it broke because it stopped after a couple days. My former boss bought a Daytona and took it back to the AD because he didn't understand the center big hand was just for the Chronograph, so he thought it didn't work. |

Oh yeah. There are a whole lot more people like this than watch geeks like us.

Many people own things because they feel the need to keep up

I play tennis with a friend who plays with a Zenith Daytona on. He knows nothing about watches. His sister gave it to him as a gift but doesn't know anything about the watch.

You'd be surprised...
Being "into" watches I notice what people are wearing and have made a couple of observations on this "topic"
Among a certain economic demographic many people get their watches at the same place as the the rest of their jewelry. In many cases the price is not an object (frequently it just goes on a house account) and when they want a watch the jeweler sends them a Rolex. They wear it knowing no more about it than I know about my wedding ring (i.e, gold content, brand etc..., I just wear it). One instant telltale sign of what I call the "casual" or "accidental" Rolex owner is that the time, but more often date, are way off... At my country club I'm known as the "watch guy" with a reputation for having knowledge in that area. I am regularly approached by guys whose watches are "broken" (and there have been some that need service and I tell them about how to get that) but in fact often just need to be wound and set. When I ask about why they chose the specific model or talk about the history/background, they have no idea and say the jeweler picked it out and sent it, I just wear it... I talked to one guy who wears a TT YMII and he told me that he really didn't like it but the jeweler told him there were only a few available on the "East Coast" and that it would be a good investment purchase so he bought it... I just left that alone... Much, much, more the case with female members who I have also "fixed" watches for... To many, many, owners it's just "their watch" they aren't at all "into" the history, stories, etc... like those on this forum... |

It makes no sense to have a Rolex and don't wear it.

Seeing as 90% of my clients wearing nice watches know nothing about them other than the vacation on which they purchased it, I'm not surprised. Angered I have little to no one to geek out with? Possibly. Surprised? Unfortunately not.
