The Sheriff did not want the liability or accusations that fake Rolexes were real when returned....Deputies are not jewelers or appraisers. Inventories were always very generic for everything.

Still scary though. Maybe nowadays the Sheriff can take a picture of the watch and attach it to the owners file before putting the watch in the safe? Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it. |

Well, in the event of your untimely arrest, the handcuffs might definitely bang up your watch and I am pretty sure that Sarge will not give a hoot about your expensive timepiece. As a matter of fact, he will likely do his best to inflict as much damage as possible should he have an insecurity complex or a perceived socioeconomic gap. Secondly, as for strolling around the clink with your Rolex....not gonna be an issue. Believe it or not, there will be no pressure to keep up with the Joneses here, nor, are you going to impress Bubba with your good taste in jewelry. In addition, the last thing you want to be doing, is spending your time looking at the clock, for, it will move very slowly. Finally, your grail will be taken good care of while you are caged up in your new digs, so no need to worry. Consider it a safe queen for your stay in the hole. Bottom line, if you have a hunch that you might be going away for a while, wear your Apple watch!

I have been arrested, taken to station and jailed. Didn't have a rolex then, and all was ok in the end, no record and apologies all around. I won't go into any more detail than that, but I will say the process isn't easy or pleasant. It's not meant to be. When i made bail everything I had when I went in was returned including over $300 in cash.

just kidding about me being arrested I probably should have said that...I've managed to avoid arrest for 52 years so far, but you raise a good point...that just might be dangerous.

I was arrested while wearing a Rolex. In college, a buddy and I got into a fight with bouncers at a college bar. The cops came and told us to go home. We got in my buddy's car and as soon as we hit the road they pulled us over. My bud got DUI and I got disorderly conduct :D
I was given a Rolex Datejust (black sticks with fluted bezel on jubilee) for my HS graduation, so my watch was (maybe) 5-6 months old. When they threw me in jail for the night, they confiscated all of my possessions in my pockets, my belt, chapstick, watch, etc. and put them in an envelope and kept them. The next morning when they released me they gave everything back. No harm -- no foul. Yes, I was a crazy mo fo in school :D |

I’m guessing he lives in Virginia... 20 over or over 80 regardless of speed limit in VA is reckless driving, a misdemeanor offense. Yes, if you go 10 over in a 70 you’re guilty of a misdemeanor. Over 100 is an automatic arrest and 30 days in jail, I believe. Don’t speed in Virginia!

I too was arrested sort of. The charge was DUI following a field test. It happened to be on a St. Patty's Day in Tucson, AZ. Because I always have poor static balance, they arrested me for the DUI charge. They called in back-up who had a portable breathalyzer which I had the pleasure of blowing into. After I blew 0.000% alcohol the kind office gave me a ticked for speeding, begrudgingly gave back my license, and let me go. I guess the scent of the beer I had five hours earlier still was present. Again it was St. P's day and I was driving a Mustang so I must've been drunk. It was the officer's first arrest for DUI and his first time giving a field sobriety test. The 10 mph over ticket stuck. No cuffs were applied at any time. It was a St. Patrick's Day Clamp Down operation.

I probably made 2500+ arrests in my career as a cop. Never did I intentionally try to "inflict as much damage as possible" on any arrestee's property. Being arrested and knowing that you’re not able to go home is one of the most traumatic things that can happen to a person. Whenever I arrested someone, I always remembered that. For me it was never personal, it was strictly business. That’s how I was taught, that’s how I taught others; and I’m sure the rest of the cops on this forum conducted their business the same way. Feel free to spout off about something you know about. It’ll make you look like less of a moron.

Thanks for all the input guys!
I feel like I have a better understanding of what may or may not happen now I will add, I’m not a bad guy! The only ticket on my record right now is for being at the park after hours.... And that’s because I was about 20 years old and didn’t even know parks close |

The cops will offer you a nice casebudi and place it in there for you after gently removing it with white gloves. Usually it’s returned sonically cleaned and with a 2 year warranty.

You want to know what will become of your watch if you are arrested?
What country will you be getting arrested in? USA. No problemo. Mexico. No bueno. Thailand. Watch disposition is the least of your worries. Try to stay alive. Iran. Good-bye. We will never see you again. |

Wait! What?!? You can't give 3/4 of the story and then bail on it. You gave us a good outline, spill the rest! Why were you jailed and then given an apology?

I worked in the receiving desk/jail for over a year when I was super low seniority. We all hated it and none us of wanted to be there. It sucked. It is an awful job. Constantly night after night dealing with drunk angry people and the mentally ill. That you didn't even arrest. You are just trying to process and house them.
So. Here is what is going to happen to you and your Rolex. Upon arrival and after waiting your turn you will be booked in. First step will be a very thorough search where your belt, shoelaces, string if you are wearing sweatpants, all possessions including your wedding ring will be taken from you. You will have it all inventoried and you will be issued a receipt and asked to review it and sign. If you refuse to sign that will be noted but it won't stop you from having everything of value taken from you. If you are lucky you'll get a jail issued uniform and sandals otherwise you have to walk around in loose shoes while holding up your pants. You will be interviewed by a nurse ( if you are lucky ), fingerprinted and mugged ( term for a booking photo. ) You'll be given a sack lunch ( again if you are lucky or unlucky if you have ever seen a jail sack lunch ) and be given a chance to use the phone within reason. Thing is nobody ever remembers friends or families numbers because remember earlier your phone was taken away.. Don't be jerk and you'll probably get to have a look at your phone for a number you might need. You'll be put in with everyone else and again ( if you are lucky ) nobody will f*%& with you. Then if you are issued bail you will have a chance to make it. This process can take time. If you are booked in on a Friday night and can't make bail you stay till Monday to see a judge. Peanut butter and jelly and kool aid all weekend. Oh and you get to ( again if you are lucky ) take a in front of a bunch of random strangers. Nobody got their own cell like in the movies unless they were a danger to themselves or others or pre-op transgender. Some of the cells were packed on a busy night with people sleeping or trying to sleep on the floor. Don't ever be a jackass to the staff or deputies/officers there. They can make your stay bearable or suck even worse. There you have it. Oh and when you leave you will get your items back. |
