How tough is a datejust?

A modern DJ (ii and 41) has the toughest movement even is more shock resistant than a sub. The latter does not have a Peraflex shock absorber that DJ has. DJ is a very robust watch.

Some background from where I'm coming from. I really like the 36mm Explorer. I like that it is dressy enough to wear to work, tough and sporty enough to wear while doing yard work, hunting, whatever you want, and you'll never have to worry about it in any setting and is under the radar. I'm getting married next year and my wife to be wants to gift me a watch and the 36mm Explorer being discontinued is what turned my attention to the datejust since we could get a brand new one. I want to do everything in the watch but I worry about being too active in the datejust. I always felt like they were meant for the office. I'm also curious about how the polished center links on the oyster bracelet hold up. I now it is tough, but was it really meant for active wear?

I'm currently in the process of hunting down a 39mm 214270 Explorer but have a feeling it's going to be too big for my taste.

It will take anything you can dish out. A two-tone DJ was my dads beater watch. He was a contractor and wore them operating heavy equipment and working in construction sites. Never serviced in 20 years plus, and no issues. It was like his g shock.

Think of the DateJust as what Rolex stands for. Smart, durable and attractive. It’s the best all around watch you will ever need. In many people’s minds the DateJust is Rolex and rightfully so.

Fellow Ag here...I wear a five digit stainless steel DateJust with fluted bezel just about everywhere. This thing has gathered the least amount of wear/scratches of any watched I've owned. I wouldn't and don't hesitate to wear it in any setting (office, at home, on the ranch/farm, etc.). I'm planning to pick up a 39mm Explorer soon but will continue to daily my DateJust, as well.

The Datejust is by far the most popular Rolex model I see when watch spotting all over the country. Outside this bubble of Professional model preference, the DJ is what people probably think of most when “Rolex” comes up.

Thanks to all for the replies. I knew I was wrong about it being an office watch, but I haven't seen one out in the wild in a good long while. This just makes the decision between a 114270 Explorer and 126234 DJ that much harder. The polished center links and lack of safety clasp definitely played into my thinking too.

Any Rolex is super tough. I agree with everyone who say the Jubilee is better.

However if the Explorer is what you wanted, you can still get them from one of the trusted sellers here on TRF. I know DavidSW has a few, some of them new. I own one myself and it is an amazing watch, I highly recommend it and at 36mm perfect. The Datejust is great as well no doubt, but it feels a little bit like an "office" watch to me. The Explorer is more versatile and probably will keep its value better over time.

My father has worn a datejust for as long as I can recall, he bought it in the early 70s, it’s plexi glass not sapphire. He’s worn it every day, work, travel, holidays, grouse shooting, sailing etc etc ... it’s been serviced a couple of times, the crystal has been replaced, but it’s handled it all very well. I’m sure the modern models are much more robust. You really have no problem whatsoever.

As previously stated - there is nothing delicate about the DJ. Worn by millions of non watch geeks as their one and only watch for years on end is testament to their durability. The professional models get most of the limelight from collectors, but don't overlook the DJ as a daily wearer and arguably the most versatile Rolex out there.

If you like the 114270 I would challenge you to look at the 116000, especially the newer black dial. I have it and a datejust the date just is nice because of the date, the op is probably more aesthetically pleasing.

The DJ is a pretty though piece, durable. There is something just different about that piece, its certainly a timeless piece.

yea but it does not have an easy link and you put a platinum crown on it so i don't know that you could consider it a tool watch or a sports watch....

Agreed. Just wondering why you don't have a DJ in your collection since you think so highly of them?
