30k £ is huge first off. I suggest you go grey and stand your ground on your pick

You’re “not too fussed” what SS model?
Recently I’ve spotted an explorer 1, Air-King and the odd YM in windows from time to time. If one of them would suit, make some calls and you may get one.

If it’s something like a steel Daytona or GMT on jubilee you may still struggle despite your spending so I’d probably just bite the bullet and go grey market

Done over by an AD

I was hoping this was about a watch restoration; sorry to hear this happened. I don't trust merchants further than I can throw them. Just another example of greed. This guy's other job is selling crack to kids at playgrounds.

The narrative that ADs are more likely to sell to individuals who will “love and cherish” the watch needs to stop. They do not care about your affection for a timepiece or anything else for that matter. They only care about doing business. And it’s in their best interest to sell you as much as they can, especially pieces that do not have the same level of interest as SS.

Don’t fool yourself, the AD may feign interest over your love of Rolex horology, but the truth is they couldn’t care less if you walked outside after the purchase and threw it in a lake. Either way, they’ve made their money.

Maybe where you live, but certainly not true around these parts (when it comes to desirable SS models)
Rolex are on ADs backs to ensure watches go to end users who aren’t flippers. As a result an AD who trusts that you’ll keep the watch is more likely to supply the watch to you. Yes they want the bundle sales, but they want to know you won’t walk out and flip the watch

I am in the midlands and both the ADs around here seem to be honest and fair, I have sourced the watches I want (maybe not the hottest), but I don't care: Milgauss Blue, Deepsea Black and YM 40mm rhodium all in the past 18 months. Mate had Sub Date with 12 month wait, another mate 2 month wait for SD43. None of us have previous....

Don't get court up in the hype, buy what you want, buy with the heart and not the wallet...

Dupe...

Cannot understand why anyone with any sense would buy a Rolex dress watch, if AD promised a SS (not too fussed about the flavour). And then hopefully received a watch that you are not fussy what it is as long as its SS.

If you play into it don't complain cause they play better. Know what you want, any SS does not generally fly and based on my SS throws up 1 time purchase territory vs. Establishing relationship (fix ring or other jewelry, stop by and say hi just for the sake of bsing, buy another nice brand watch does not have to be a Rolex, could be an IWC, GS, ORIS, PP, AP etc.) Tell them I want model X or and Y then stick to what you want. This in my op provides more a relationship v I will buy what I need to in order to get a SS piece... choose what you want a relationship or whatever needs to happen to get any ss...

If you have bought a dress watch like a Cellini then you have done the AD a favour and he should be delivering on his promise, so I would really push this, keep calm but make it clear you want the SS, give him a deadline of the 3/4 months he promised, and then I'd make trouble so they don't try and pull this kind of crap again.

AD 1 You 0

Why fall for such tactics if the promise is not in writing ?

Well there's an AD in London that told me I should spend £2.5k on jewellery before he'll sell me a black sub.

I would never bundle ever but if I did would only buy if the pm timepiece and ss are purchased together.

Most want you to be an established customer with some history so that kinda makes sense

Luckily, my AD here in AZ doesn't require me to "pre purchase" something I may not want just for the chance I may be able to buy a SS watch I might want. If they did, I would not buy ANYTHING from them. It's the principle of it.

My advice would be for you to spend some time researching different Rolex models (or even other brands), and find yourself a watch that speaks to you, regardless of the current trend...then go find yourself a more trustworthy AD. You'll be much happier in the long run.
That was my thought too when I first read the thread, but I must say the current SS collection is so great that most SS models would be a great treat. Hulk, Daytona, Pepsi, Batman, blue SkyD, SD43... would you refuse any of these if you do not have it already?

Is it possible to sue these people for breach of contract? It's a long shot, I know. But I'm thinking if they're served court papers it may scare the living crap out of them enough so they'll capitulate and cough up the SS for you if you'll agree to drop the case.

People need to stop. The ADs cannot do anything unless customers allow it.

No I did not buy any additional watches. I just have the DJ which is great for evening wear and I'm happy with it. I was trying (badly) to make the point that the AD wanted me to commit to another £20k without getting me a watch I would wear in the day. I quite like the 16613LB that was offered but I don't want it yet. I couldn't remain calm enough to ask what other watch, in addition to the Submariner, he wanted me to buy.

Anyhow, looks as if the grey market for SS models is, over here at least, easing just a tad. I'll probably go grey market in about 6 months if nothing from the AD. I'm not holding my breath.
