Perhaps DD40s are suddenly in high demand because when you're stuck at home 7/24 every day it's useful to have a watch that can tell you when the weekend arrives.

Prices for DD40s have skyrocketed. It makes perfect sense - the gold pieces are more hotter than the SS now.

Check out how much the gold SKyDs, Daytona's, GMTs and Gold Subs are selling for now. Even the platinum Daytona - all are selling at crazy high prices.

No stock for the 33000 usd I want to buy.

Hi guys, happy for you securing your choice DD40 years back. I took me a while to understand and appreciate the beauty of it. Wished I had observed them earlier rather than focusing on SS models. :(

Hey, waddaya mean by that?

Truly, gray prices are nuts. There's almost no Rolex I would buy today at gray prices.

Hahahaha- nothing. I know you've been enjoying your plat for a while now. I was recently thinking of trading some pieces for a Plat Daytona or DD40 but man the prices of them are insane.

Glad I recently bought my 116618LB before they started going crazy as well. That will hopefully hold me over for a while.

I dont think I would buy any Rolex at the current prices either. Absolute craziness happening. Never ever thought I would see pretty much all gold pieces sell above MSRP in the gray market.

I wonder if the "home 24/7" is a lot of it. If you have a great job and have kept it and are working from home, but not spending $$$ on vacations or a commute, you probably have what feels like extra cash lying around, might as well get something you've been wanting.

I looked at my 401k the other day and I'm up almost 8% on the year, after having been down nearly 30% in early April. Anyone with significant investments who stayed the course is doing well right now and who knows how the election is going to go? A PM Rolex is "off the books" portable wealth.

You know, my Daytona is a purchase I have never regretted for a minute, and I still think it's one of my fondest splurges ever. But it was way, way less expensive (especially used) four years ago. As much as I love it, I wouldn't buy one at today's prices.

It's unbelievable that during this Covid19, high unemployment and bad economy, the price of PM watches are skyrocketing. I will never want to pay a high premium in the gray market, I will only get it from Boutique/AD only, waiting is no problem for me.

Unbelievable times...PM pieces scarcity. I got my Rolex DD40 YG brand new from one of our trusted sellers a few years back at a steal price. At the time, it didnt seem that way and i felt like i was going to lose money on the piece since historically the PM didnt hold value as well as SS sport models. It turned out quite the opposite but in reality i didnt buy to make a profit but because i really wanted the DD.

Agreed - the watch market is crazy right now. Didn't think it has the ability to get even crazier than before. But I think it's because people with money ... still have money

When a SS royal oak is 35k a full PM DD starts to look reasonable at the same price.

I agree, people with money, generally continue to have money. So at this point the market is being pushed up. Hopefully, it will settle down at some point. I have a DD, I was lucky to buy when the price was manageable. Obviously, not cheap but manageable. One doesn’t have to be a mental giant to look at the price of gold, it was just a matter of time, before watch prices would follow. Unfortunately, as usual, the higher prices put a PM watch out of reach for some.

DD40 is one of those watches where Rolex can succeed squeezing out the greys and continue increasing pricing for their own profit. I bought mine at $36,500 retail and could perfectly see them going for $40k retail in next piece increase. After all, when PM Patek, and AP are fetching $60-$150k...and selling like cakes... $40k for a DD40 doesn’t seem unreasonable.

Now, $28k for an SS Daytona or $20k for an ss sub or Pepsi...is ridiculous.

I've never bought any PM watch for profit but the price I could get for my DD40s or my RG SkyD now trumps the profits I would have gotten from any hot SS piece.

RG SkyD are selling for close to $50k+ now. Geezus.

The markets are completely disconnected from fundamentals and it has driven us much higher than anybody anticipated and decoupled us completely from the underlying fundamentals. I'm talking about the stock market but the same priciple applies to everything else people are overpaying for - Rolexes, Porsches, Real Estate, Art, Collectibles. Some random kid I was eating dinner next to with a FAKE ass blue Rolex Sub (the dial was literally loose) complimented me on my LV sub and asked if I would sell it to him for $16k, he is an "entrepreneur" and "investor of art". I literally laughed. The bubble will burst and I can't wait to capitalize off the bag holders.
If you paid retail for your watches it wouldnt really matter if the market did crash , if you paid over retail for the one watch that you had been trying to get for a while and had to have to keep and wear then again it wouldnt really hurt you.
If you had a large amount of watches that you'd paid over retail for all of them then you might get your fingers burnt

How much of this is due to supply shortage and MSRP increases? Really hard to tell if it’s driven by increased demand.

It's also going to hurt those who are flippers, especially new to the game "entrepreneurs" and those trying to capitalize by over leveraging themselves. It will also hurt those who paid way over retail for something they financially and responsibly should not have been buying in the first place or perhaps have that perception that everything will keep going up. No one will care to admit it but yeah it will happen, people make fortunes off others misfortunes, its just an unfortunate fact and it happens all the time with real estate, collectibles, watches, jewelry etc.

Curious as to how/why lots of people on here didn’t manage to get a good discount on a DD40? Trying to get one now may be more difficult, but up until a few months ago, this was a 15-20% off watch was it not?

No it was not.

15-20% discounting days are long long gone. More than 12+ months now. Big fat ZERO discounts is the norm now especially when grays are selling them at MSRP or Above.

Some lucky guys maybe getting 5% off due to some history with the AD but anymore than that I just dont believe in this day and age and the current situation of the market.

Cant even get any discount on Platinum Daytona or DD40s these days and those are very very expensive pieces. (I've tried around 7 ADs now. Big fat zero on platinum. I decided I would buy 2 more houses with that money instead and use it as a deposit). LOL

Same. I’ve tried this with multiple ADs in the past 2 months and no luck. Have read that a few others have gotten the discount but hard to take for word in this market.
