Not really true. Im attracted to it because it's comfortable, nice looking and has a good movement. i.e sheer enjoyment of what it is.
As for chrono, well it depends. It is what it is.

The Daytona is not rare here, especially in the pre-owned market. It's not hard to find at all. You just need to have the extra cash saved up if you really want it.

As Padi says, it's that simple.

Of course, I speak for myself.

That's why I wrote "sadly, too many are attracted........." instead of "sadly ALL are attracted.............".

As a Rolex, yes.
As a chronograph, maybe no. It does not beat 36000 and not the first watch to the moon.

It is hard to find an AD or especially a grey dealer here in Japan that does not have a few to several in their respective stores. Easy to get. The prices are not inflated either.

I don't think the average person has any idea that the Daytona is even perceived to be rare.

For me it's a classic design, and yes I know the old Daytona looks slightly different. Growing up, the brand Rolex meant three watches to me. The sub, the day date and the Daytona.

I personally don't like the day date, but I will be getting my first rolex in the near future and there are only two options in my eyes. Until I started researching on this forum I didn't even know that the Daytona was supposedly this mythical beast that few have seen and even fewer could actually find.

Many people like myself just have a fascination with mechanical chronographs even if we dont have any practical use for them. If I thought a date function was more important, I would definitely get the sub date. If you want a Rolex and want a watch with a chronograph function, it's not like you have many choices.

I used to work for an AD about 10 years ago. I found the store's jewelry to be too tempting, and I needed a job where my paycheck actually came home with me, so I didn't stay very long. Back then, we got multiple calls almost daily asking if we had a Daytona in stock. The calls were almost always from NY area codes, and typically they'd hang up the second they got a no (because we really didn't normally have them very often).

I still think the SS is a beautiful, sexy, classic man's watch.

But even today some ADs are still using the hard to get hype factor to sell the SS daytona.
Great post.

Very, very over-rated watch - and I have one! My AP ROO and DSSD get all the wrist time though.

if we want to be honest, no mechanical watch is worth its price. but hey, who said that being a wis is a rational pastime?

Ten years ago the MSRP was $7900 and if you got one you could flip it for about $10,000. Not anymore.

There were members here that have dissapeared since those days. There were a few that just trolled on here trying to get Datonas from anywhere and then flipping them immediately. That is all they posted about. No other relevant imput.

One guy even after PM-ing me asking me for the name of my once great AD then called them dropping my name that he was a friend of mine and that I directed him there to get a SS Daytona. Never met the guy and did not tell him to call my AD. Pissed me off.

They are easy to get nowadays. Good, bad or indifferent.

I like the Daytona, but I'd take a Speedmaster over it any day.

Just a curious question.... since supply has gone up is it possible Rolex ramped up production?

I know we do not know exact numbers, but how else could it become so abundantly available after being such a rarity.

Abundant is probably a strong word...it would depend highly on the location of the AD. The possibility of walking into an AD and them having one is more likely now than in the past, but while I can probably walk into any AD and find a Sub or DJ, I wouldn't bet money that I can walk into any AD and find a Daytona.

I would argue that there never was any real shortage of stock, just simply massive demand. The demand has dropped, the supply has stayed roughly the same, hence more appear to be available. The place where I worked got quite a few Daytonas per year, just behind the Sub Date and GMT in terms of supply - certainly got more of them than other Sports models

I second this... Although still one of my favorites, I have noticed a slight decline in the demand for the Daytona.

But do I think the price is justified? I certainly do

I like it so much that I bought both the white and black dial. Too me, the SS Daytona worth every penny as my other half also enjoy wearing it as well!

I purchased mine well before the recent price increase, but would hesitate to pay what Rolex is asking now. My recently purchased Exp II 42, before price increase also, has been worth every penny.

I have a sub and a white daytona... I think they compliment each other and boy that daytona just feels good on the wrist.
