Icon5 SS Daytone. Does it worth the money?

Hello Everybody,

I always had couple of questions about SS Daytona's price and I think here is the best place to ask them.

Thanks for sharing you opinion about these questions:

Why It is so expensive? Even the Rolex DateJust II with 18k white gold and diamond dial is 10K which is cheaper than SS Daytona. Does it really worth the money to pay for an SS watch?

Why SS Daytona is 3 times more expensive than Omega Moon Watch? Is it really 3 times better?

Is it just about the brand? If Omega replaces the "Omega logo" with a "Rolex logo" on the moon watch do you guys pay 3 times more for it?

Daytona = Datejust II with white gold+ milgauss. Is it really THAT good? Why?

Thanks for sharing your opinions.

it is worth what people are willing to pay for it. i am not a watch lover that is concerned about the "guts". i am much more interested in how it looks and feels. and i think the daytona "feels" very much worth what it costs.

I think you mean stainless steel DJ II with a WG bezel and diamond dial. THAT one is 10k, but a WG DD for instance, would be about 30k. Still 3x on the SS Daytona.

If you're asking if the SS Daytona is worth 12k, I say yes definitely. My RG Daytona retails now for 37k. And I think that one is worth it too.

Just try on a Daytona. Play with the functions. Look at yourself in the mirror with it (preferably a full body mirror if your AD has one). You'll realize why it's 12k.

It's more complicated than a DJ, unfortunately list prices keep rising, it's worth
list price but when sellers sell it for a thousand more than list, then no.

Myself not a fan of the modern Daytona in any form, and over the years it amazed me at the height of Daytona fever what some were willing to pay for the SS.Perhaps it was because it was then hard to get at retail, and the thought of owning a hard to get watch. And with many of the so celebs wearing the SS it became perhaps the must have fashion watch. While the TT version could be found at almost the same price as the SS that only came in two dial versions. While IMHO the better looking TT came in many dial options but was not the in fashion SS.Now many are having there SS dials changed to what's in general only found on the all gold models perhaps to make them look like the all gold versions. While I agree the cal 4130 is a very fine movement IMHO the SS version is a very over rated and hyped as a must have watch still although now its quite easy to get in most countries. But even today some ADs are still using the hard to get hype factor to sell the SS daytona.

To the OP: I think you have the bug or itch for it, and perhapsmare are in a bit of denial. Don't worry, we've all been here. We don't want to admit that we are eventually going to give into our desire and pay that much for something that we can't immediately rationalize.

It's kinda like when a person of the opposite sex truly has no interest in you at all, they will be pleasant, and subtly ignore you. But if they are working hard at ignoring you, and going out of their way to let you know it, they actually are paying you attention because they are effected by you. Similar to the way you seem to be effected by the Daytona.

For me it's the Subs that toy with my heart. Especially the old ones. I try to ignore them, but they know I want them! And, the redder they are the redder I get with desire and envy. I hate that you are so expensive... You know your not worth it....please come to me, let me hold you!

Either way, you should just settle for that Omega moon watch with the great personality. Who needs that curvaceous hot and sexy Daytona to satisfy them anyway!

You can say the same thing about a solid gold Rolex. The actual gold is worth perhaps $8k, but Rolex charges $30k for one.

A watch's worth is what the market wants to pay. If it's not worth it to you, then don't buy one. If you can justify the price, then buy it. Lots of members here own Daytona's and so it's obviously worth it to them.

IMO the SS Daytona is worth about retail but no more, the movement helps justify that especially when compared to DJ2 Sub-Cs and anything else using the Cal 3135.

Now the vintage Daytonas on the other hand are stupidly priced. There's no reason for them to cost $20-30k for basic models, there's even less reason for PNs to justify their prices, and the people buying PN "Texas" dials for $60K and up need their heads examined. A 5510 totally understandable, an early GMT with a mint condition bakelite bezel, why not, but a common and easily available SS chronograph... just no.

Rolex over pricing now

I think Rolex is now over pricing their watches, OK the emerging market from Asia, China and India may tolerate and capable of paying these prices but as for the rest of the world, at least for me, is out of reach or not good value.

The Exp II, SS Sub, even the 41mm SS DateJust are over £5k. When I purchased my SS Daytona in 2008 it was £4460 and now £7960. At the same time the IWC Portuguese Auto Chrono was £3700 which in my opinion is a much better looking and quality superior to the SS Daytona. Now the IWC has only gone up to £5900, and most AD would get a discount. My $0.02.

Good answers here, and I agree, but keep in mind you are asking people in a Rolex Fan forum if a SS Daytona is worth it. Thats l like going over to a macrumors forum and asking people if they think an iPad is cool.

Sadly, too many are attracted to the Daytona only because of it's perceived rarity and the competition of aquiring a so called hard to find piece rather than the sheer enjoyment of the reference and, God forbid, the real need for a chrono function.

OP - your math is way wrong and you have the question backwards IMHO.
Question should have been, is a TT DJ II w/dia. worth a Daytona?

Daytona is not worth a DJ II + MG. (Daytona = $12,000; DJ II SS/WG bezel w/10 dia. dial = $11,050; MG = $7,650)

Net-Net, Daytona is worth $$$ that any sane buyer is willing to pay - just like a DJ II buyer.

BTW, a pre-owned TT Daytona is in the TRF Classifieds by Anastasios.
$7400 for a 2000-era black dialed one fresh from an RSC quality service.

That is closer to the real value of a Daytona after you lose the AD mark-ups.

Agree Dan - the power of brand marketing. There are easier to read chrono's like the Tudor Heritage.

All due respect for the Speedmaster Pro, I've owned mine for over thirty years.

Since picking up my SS Daytona, black dial, I always reach for it over the Speedy, inspite of it taking a second or two longer to read.

Fit, finish, looks and feel make it worth every penny imho. I'm also a timing freak using the chrono function several times a day.
