Haha I love this topic. I don't own a Rolex yet. BUT, I will say - I recently bought my first Automatic Diver - a Seiko.... And.... She can't keep it off HER wrist!!!

A surprisingly good start to bigger things!

Start small, get her hooked too.

I have told her that some are "fakes" I have even shown her the website with the watch I own is on for $250.00. I tell her I need so many and buy the REAL one's that I really want and the fake one's for the one's I just like. Also, I combine this with "getting a really good deal" on the real one's.

Give a little, get a little.
Or give a lot, get a lot.
Gotta keep it balanced.

I tell her that my purchases is part of a broader financial strategy called "asset conversion". I convert my cash into precious metals and collectibles.

I don't know about KY, but in my old (community property) state of CA... that's a very expensive strategy.

At one point my wife had more Rolexes than I did (that was only two, to my one). She also has a Cartier Pasha. She knows a beautiful watch, and she understands why I love them...although she does laugh at me for it sometimes.

Not too long ago, I told her that I wanted to buy a new Omega, and she actually told me to get a Rolex instead, because they hold their value better. Marriage isn't always perfect, but when she says something like that you gotta love her!

But I think it really comes down to what cop414 said - don't let somebody tell you how to spend your hard-earned money, and don't tell them how to spend theirs.

Sitting in my lawyers office as I type this after a year and a half we are hopefully a month away from finalization. Trade up and the money can be recouped.

Before I bought my new Tudor, I bought my wife a Tudor of her own.

I'd rather have her be an advocate for my hobby than an adversary. By including her in something I enjoy, she has begun to enjoy it, too. She now often asks me about Submariners, Daytonas, and other watches she otherwise would have never cared about.

It's a lot easier to enjoy something when you don't feel like you have to justify, hide or make excuses for it.

Try telling your friend it's over $34k retail...but do it in person...the reaction is priceless

That's great...I have to try that one! "Prices are going up 8% next week, there is a two year wait list, and this thing will be worth more than I paid by the time I get home."

This thread reminds me of an old golf joke. Friend calls up his buddy and says "Want to play golf tomorrow?" His buddy says, "Let me check with the wife and see if it's OK." The friend says, "You mean you have to ask your wife permission? How lame. I don't have to ask my wife permission. I do what I want.

The buddy checks with his wife, comes back on the phone and says, "She says I can't tomorrow, but how about the day after that?"

The guys says, "Let me check with my wife to see if I want to."

---------

I don't ask permission and I've never been questioned. If I buy a new watch it is not at the expense of food on the table or the mortgage getting paid, and is not affecting the college funds or retirement accounts. If it was I wouldn't be buying it and she knows it.

Of course, she's earned the same respect from me.

I've worked hard over the years to convince my wife that watch collecting can be somewhat of an investment. If purchased properly you shouldnt lose too much money and over time they can appreicate in value. Plus they are actully pretty liquid because of sites like this. If we needed the money I could sell a watch in less than 24 hours and have money wired to my account. Its one of the best hobbies a guy could have.

I also brought her to the AP factory during my visit so she could get a full understanding for the art that goes into watches as well as the long history....

In the end she could give a crap about that sales pitch...If I buy a new one she wants to know which of the others is getting sold...

Remember Frank, Dean, & Sammy, saying, "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

Momma's got more ice than I got watches.

Is that like: "When you're good to Mama, Mama's good to you"?

If I listened to my wife more often I would have a lot more nice things and be perpetually broke.

Funny, if I listened to mine it would be the inverse of that!

When my house-boss and I were first married we ended up having to sell all of our stuff to break our lease so I could take a new job across the country due to bouncing paychecks and she being laid off (never work for the same company). Four years later our private business failed and we ran the risk of loosing the house due to the small business loan. I liquidated my collection and took a hit to the 401k to stay solvent and wore a g-shock for a year. I still keep it as a reminder.

She did what she could on her end with some of her jewelry though i wouldn't let her touch her 401k. Those experiences proved to my wife that I will never let a hobby get in the way of our family being able to live and she respects that (even to the tune of me selling my 1st Tudor Sub I received the day she told me she was pregnant with our daughter, the same watch I wore at her birth and had some high sentimental value to me). This coupled with the fact that I don't get excessive results in her not being concerned. I've earned it as has she over the years. We've been married for 15 years and have a combined bank account. Never understood married couples that have separate accounts personally.
