Bad investment full stop. Even if you managed to sell the watch at more or less same price a couple of years later it still wouldn't be a good 'investment'. Investments are meant to increase in price (inflation adjusted) or produce yields. If you are able to wear a watch without a loss that is a very attractive scenario for a product being put to use, but it is still no investment.

As others mention precious metal Rolexes tend to depreciate more than its SS counterparts - making it even less of an attractive scenario.

Cars as an investment Daniel? Don't even get me started Unless you happen to pick the right Vintage model, I think it is fair to say that your Volvo (or 99% of all cars) was never even in the vicinity of being an investment to begin with

But in comparison I would agree that Rolex watches in general uphold their value better than cars and if you happen to pick the right vintage/rare/future hyped model it might actually become an investment

If it helps you close a deal by impressing a business associate, then it was a good investment. Otherwise no chance. You'll have a hell of a time reselling it.

I think there are better things to invest in. I did not buy my Rolex as an investment. I bought my Rolex to wear and enjoy. There are no plans to sell it. I could not see buying the platinum Daytona and just sticking it in a safe or bank for the rest of my time of owning it. Life is too short. Wear it and enjoy it.

Maybe if you bought a mint condition P1800.

I doubt it, especially in only 5 years. But, no one really knows.

The Plat Daytona will initially depreciate and then will appreciate over a period of decades and will eventually be worth more than its original MSRP.

Good investment? No Great Watch? Yes
Buy a watch to wear & enjoy, never as an investment.

Should have gotten in 10 years ago.

You know when you post those excellent photos I have to say the investment is an investment in your personal enjoyment in a world class timepiece.

Depends on how you look at it... If you say "would i make money on it after 5 years?" then no. But if you say "is it still worth some good money after enjoyed it for years?" then i would say yes ! Most Rolex watches are sort of fixed value compared to for example a car.
And the Platinum Day-date are still worth good money even the older ones.

But offcourse dont buy it on retail, because the money you will lose then on the watch is much higher because you would have to lose atleast 30% ! Someone can already buy a new one with more then 25% off retail.

Just my 0.2c

Cheers !

Would not buy a watch as an investment, especially a newer model. Buy it if you are going to wear it and enjoy it.

Will echo most of what's been said. Bad investment IMHO. Like buying a single $75,000 share minus any discount. Even kept in plastic, say in 25 years it is valued at $100,000. Now good luck finding a buyer.

Now I have to make up numbers for all of this here but say you took that same $75,000 and bought 1000 shares of a stock that paid a 3% dividend. Assume no increase/decrease in share price and no increase/decrease in dividend percentage. After 25 years, you've made $82,000 on the initial investment for a total of $157,000. And you can sell whenever you want.

So buy the watch if you like it, but I wouldn't buy it or any other watch to make money.

When you buy a plat Daytona you are investing in your happiness. If you have the means to do that with no worries, it will never be waste of money.

I would say no on this one. The platinum is just a way of taking money by taking advantage from the Daytona's "platinum brand".

But you can't wear your real estate and bullion. Again modern watches not investments but are timepieces meant to enjoy. This thread is silly to me and anything contrary to wearing for enjoyment is crazy IMHO. I buy watches to enjoy and wear and investments serve a different purpose last time I checked!

Very true indeed ... what you said, I say the same to my wife. I encourage her to buy gold. I look at gold coins and little gold tablets with the same excitement as I look at a plastic fork ....

If the OP is a watch person, then he should enjoy the watch period.. as you said. But if he is not a watch person and just looking for investment, then there are way better options than buying a watch.

In the WIS world, the meaning of investment is to buy preowned, in excellent condition at excellent price and worst case, you will break even...

Strongly disagree as you should take a look at used market for many modern release complication and grande complication Pateks...Not very good!!! Many are selling for 20-30% below retail and some worse. Now retired ones like 5070, 5970 etc which were made in smaller quantities and for shorter duration a different story. Buy a watch right for deep discount and it surely can hold value close to purchase price. That doesn't make it a good investment though as one wants to make money on their money not sit tight or lose small amount. As I said buy a watch to wear and enjoy and not for investment in anything other than pure enjoyment for years!
