Probably one of the many secret counterfeit identifying marks. Much harder to line that up perfectly off center than to create one that lines up like before. It is another cool detail in the scheme of things.

Well, it is interesting to see a seldom noticed variation..

A few years back all the rage was noticing where the end of the seconds hand went past the o in Rolex..

Simple explanation. On maxi dial, the hour and minute hands are bigger while the second hand is the same size as the non-maxi dial.

on other models (that uses maxi hands) however, the seconds hand seemed to be of the same size as that from pre-maxi hands era..

and mik, nice that you brought it up. I've actually noticed it (this back of the second hand nicely lining up with the merc hand) ages ago and just thought that it was one of those QC and design brilliance of rolex.
But since the introduction of maxi hands... only now we see some differences.

I think it is how the new hour hands are slightly longer in the maxi set, I don't think the seconds hands have not changed.

I have to think that it was no coincidence that the older models lined up perfectly, probably one of the many tiny design details that makes the watches so beautiful to us by hitting some lower level pleasure center in our brains that likes to see symmetry.

Assuming it was done by design, I'm surprised they didn't do the same on the maxi dials. Maybe leaving the second hand just a hair shorter helps play into the overall maxi look.

Honestly, I probably never would have noticed it on my own as I just don't look at the small details of a watch that closely. When I'm wearing my watch it's always running anyway and when I pull it out of the drawer its rarely stopped with the tail of the second hand right atop the hour hand. As a counterfeit check it is cool to know though.
