Rolex for 11yr son...?
Dad gave me a zodiac dive watch when I was 13. Funny my mom gave it to him, but I don't think he really liked it that much as he didn't wear it often. So a great way to "pay it forward". I thought it was awesome and it did start the watch thing for me. I fixed it up a few years ago and put a cool band on it and gave it back to Mom. She wears it regularly. I will get a pic next time I am over there.

I'll probably be in the minority here and say that if you feel like he deserves it and appreciates it I'd say go for it. I don't see a problem if he's going to wear it mainly on weekends or with his parents around. It's all relative.

aaaaand to the cat above who said they got a rolex at 11 because they got good grades on a report card: School before you're 18 is compulsory and good grades are expected.
Rewarding a kid with anything other than some LEGOs isn't doing anyone any favors. Especially society. One day that kid is going to enter the work force and the rest of us will have to deal with him. Not your kid specifically, just any kid who gets extravagant gifts for simply existing. To the OP: the Sistem51 is a fine place to play, as is Seiko. Why not consider a vintage, like a Favre Leuba Soaking?

Get him something he can bang up. Boys will be boys, after all. If his enthusiasm for watches lasts, give him a rolex on some milestone: graduation, first job, engagement etc.
That said, I was wearing a Seamaster at 15, but I bought it myself from my summer income. |

I definitely say go for it. I am 35 and have two little kids and my son will get one of my watches one day. I like your plan on him not owning it yet. When the people say you are crazy I do not completely agree as yes it's expensive but seems like you can afford it and you really feel your kid is ready go for it. I don't like how people say go for something cheaper. If money is not a problem for someone to respect something should not matter if it's 5 bucks for 5,000. I would insure it though :).

Ultimately this question is up to you to answer, as he is your son and you know his strengths and weaknesses regarding his maturity level.
That being said, I got my first Rolex at 11 years old, but that was solely with my own money I earned from working as well as saving. It was the lowest end Rolex I could find, I think I paid $900. Sold it a few years later and nearly tripled my initial investment, and decided to see if I could possibly make money by selling Rolexes here on the forums. Years later here I am a Vintage Rolex dealer..and infected by the watch bug even worse. |

Have you considered his safety? What about being mugged or killed over a watch? Not sure how it is in your country but I know here in the states people get jumped for shoes and and designer brands and jewelry. I would not put a Rolex on my sons arm regardless of how much money we may or may not have.
I think about that MTV show about spoiled rich kids that get 16 birthday parties that cost over $200K,,what WHY?? spoiled brats I say. Not saying yours is a spoiled brat but just saying spoiling kids with nice things is one thing but spoiling kids with luxury things is another. No need for an 11 year old boy to wear such a watch that can put him in danger. my 2 cents |

No way in hell I would ever buy my 11 y.o. son a Rolex. There are many reasons not to do it, and no good reason for it.
To each their own, I guess. |

Good grief, you people are utterly bonkers. A heavy, uber-expensive luxury watch for a eleven year old? Just unbelievable! He's eleven!

Get it, let him try it on sometimes but keep it for when he is nice. If at 16 he understands the value and specialty... Give it to him!!
Edit: dont let an 11 year old wear a rolex what was i thinking.

This message is not ment to be personal.
Rolex and a Iphone for a 11 year old????? Who is an 11 year old gonna call with the Iphone? Spongebob? Transformers?.. Why would any kid need a Rolex when they are 11? No matter how mature they are they do not understand the value, the meaning, etc.. Come on.. Let the kids be kids. Get him a nice Casio and teach the kid to appreciate the value by earning things. |

Ok to sum this up and what i have seen in other posts.
Its ok to buy 3-4PM rolexes or more a year. Its ok to buy a sub for your newborn to give to him/her when they turn 18y. But no go to buy yourself an Explorer to keep in the safe until your 11y old son turns 18, that is if you let him wear "your" watch on weekends. Point taken - thank you. I'm not sure where you are?
You are going to : Buy it for him now? Lend it to him sometimes? Give it to him when he is 18? It's just a watch and he is your son - ask him what he would like to do. Could be he may not be on the page.

He would not be comfortable getting the watch for him to have, but it would be ok to borrow mine from time to time - thats the setup as i wrote in the OP. Anyways i guess i came to my senes and i will put the plans on hold. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

He's way too likely to get hassles from other kids about I think. Seiko and Citizen and G Shock make fantastic presents and fly under a kid's radar

Nothing is more rewarding than earning it... Can this be used to motivate him to achieve something that will benefit him in the future? Help him earn something great... Then reward his efforts?
Seiko is still a great starter!

When I was 11, I bought my own digital casio watch and I could not have been prouder. I was happy that I paid for it with the money that I had earned the months before. Even though it was only 25 dollars, that felt like a fortune at that age..
I had to wait until I was 18 before I could try on my dad's Rolex for the first time. In that regard, to me, it would not be justifiable.

If you let your son wear your watch on occasions in a somewhat controlled situation/environment then it might help him to learn responsibility and how to take care of things. It may also encourage his appreciation for fine mechanical watches. Wearing a Rolex doesn't have to be about "materialism" as some people suggest. Sometimes it's just for the love of watches. Nothing preventing him from also saving up and buying his own Seiko or other brand too. I let my 7 y/o son wear my old Tag F1 on special occasions - otherwise it sits in a drawer. He loves it because it's a nice change from his Flik Flak, and it's daddy's watch. He is particularly careful with it too, more than I ever was. |
