Don't flash it, but if you've got it flaunt it.

Very well put, Peter.

At 73 I am growing older, not up. Learned 50 years ago it doesn't matter what people think of what I am doing. Everything is to please me and my family. No ego problems here.

OP, I think I get what you are saying. A few thoughts...not meant to offend or stir up controversy, but more so the reflect on upon an alternative perspective:

1) Many have shared here, and in similar threads, the basic premise of "not caring about what others think about you." I think is is fair advice, because there is a tendency for humans beings to judge others based upon superficial stuff (ie. what kind of watch is being worn), and we should not be riled up or bothered about this.

2) Another parallel stream of thought here has been that one should not be ashamed to have whatever material possessions that they have, especially if they have "worked hard for it." I am also in agreement with this. However, it seems that with some (but not all!) of these type of comments, there is an assumption that the people who have "less" somehow worked not as hard as "us" who did. Who knows this for sure...I know I don't.
I know that although I've worked pretty hard to get where I'm at, if I'm honest, my willpower and talent was not all that got me there. Circumstances and the right people taking a chance on me at the right time also played a part. Maybe not everyone's circumstances reward hard work the same?

3) With the above two thought processes, the protagonist is the individual. What I mean is that the emphasis is on how the Rolex (or insert whatever visible luxury item you want) wearer feels and is affected by what others may perceive. I think the OP is coming from the opposite paradigm. Rather, he is concerned for how his watch wearing choices, in certain contexts, may have a detrimental effect on others. In other words, he's trying to be empathetic towards a fellow human who, for whatever reason, may not be in the same economic position. I don't think the OP is ashamed of working hard to earn what he has, nor do I think he's ashamed of having some well-deserved nice watches. I just think he's trying to be courteous to a friend/loved one. I think this is a reasonable thing for him to wrestle with.

4) Comments have also been made along the lines of "if your friend feels that way, then that says something about your friend." Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. I do think it says something about the OP that he cares enough not to hurt his friend, regardless of how unreasonably fragile that friend may be.

I'm not trying to lecture anyone here. I think, for this topic as well as so many other here, many will just agree to disagree. I think I understand where many are coming from here...just wanted to offer a slightly different perspective.

Putting flame suit on now. I truly wish all to wear whatever they choose to wear in good conscience and good health!

I agree, which is also why I‘m careful what I wear around certain other people. I wouldn‘t mind wearing a DD to some party where everybody else wears golden PP, VC or AP but wouldn‘t somewhere where people gather who are struggling financially.

I also think that it is with shear luck that I got to where I am, as you could also count the luck of having the intelligence/willpower to achieve my goals or being lucky to be healthy enough....

You would be surprised how many people don't notice a gold watch. Yes, try to be mindful of where you're wearing one (bad neighborhoods, homeless shelter, etc), but if you gravitate towards it just get it. I enjoy just wearing mine to the grocery store or walking the dog. You're not shoving it in people's faces so just enjoy it

Let’s be honest, we all know that the DayDate is a ‘statement’ watch, advertised as such by Rolex. In yellow gold it designed to be highly obvious, and to ‘say’ something about the wearer. That’s the whole point.
Question is, what do you personally think it says about you? One way or another, it’s not a shy watch.

I think you will all find that the average Joe in the street won’t even notice what ticker you're all wearing. It’s all in your head.
Depending on what circles you move in some people may even think it’s a $20 Walmart special

Just enjoy the watch.

Exactly. Very few people notice and even fewer care.

Spot on! Definitely all in your head but I am the same way. I had a yg DD for ~15 yrs and wore it maybe a handful of times each year and wasted all that time not enjoying my favorite watch. I bought a Platinum DD and cured myself of the anxiety and wear it often

I own a small company with 11 employees. I wear my 36DJ fluted bezel to the office but take it off when I get there. I don't want to wear it in front of my employees because I think they'll all want a raise or feel underpaid somehow. And don't think they don't know what it is bc they do and they talk. I recently went to a neighbor's bbq and wore my beater instead. I wear it in front of strangers but I just don't feel comfortable showing it off in front of family and friends.
I'll get over it one day but for now I'm flying under the radar.

i wear a gold sub and no one has said boo. i think michael kors has created a mindset that anything that looks bling/metal must be a "fashion watch" and not real gold. honestly if anybody thinks buying a rolex will get them any attention at all they are in for a big shock. in my experience it is crickets!

Nothing wrong with being tactful about the people around you when choosing jewelry.

I would not wear a gold watch when feeding the homeless. Not because I was embarrassed by having one, but because my wealth is not the point of that situation.

But in most other situations nobody notices your watch, so you can wear whatever you want.

Most people don't know how much watches cost, so if you think that they know how much money you might have because if a watch, that's all in your head.

Assuming I like gold watches to begin with (which I don’t by the way), I’d have no problem wearing one at all.

My situation, where I live, and the people in my life are probably different though...

Either that or leave the God damn watch at home.

These posts are pathetic.

Do you want us to educate you on what to say, how to dress and how to treat your girlfriend too?????

They are just bragging on social media to make themselves feel better while at the same time making it look like they are not bragging by appearing stressed because of their opulence

These posts really tick me off too to be honest. I don't understand why you would want to buy a watch you are scared to wear.
Ok buy it and i will wear it for you...lol
Being decent entails being modest with people. And empathizing with their plight. It doesn't mean suffering yourself.
Enjoy the watch and move on. You are not promised tomorrow.

I wouldn't buy one if I didn't intend to wear it. Seems a lot of money to hide away unused in a safe or a drawer.
If you are afraid it could be stolen from you or will upset friends then don't own one. Simple.
I don't own one and will never buy one simply because the DD and DJ (in any metal with or without diamonds) are watches that don't appeal to me.

Just because you personally have a negative opinion towards a Day-Date doesn't mean others should have to agree with you. Do you really think anyone here that spends $35,000+USD on a watch should be scared to wear it and just leave it in a safe or in a dresser drawer? I really don't understand the purpose of your initial post, other than wanting some sort of sympathy or validation. I really have to chuckle at your "Tony Soprano" screen name.

Yes, I wanted some validation. Thats true.

I have a good ipinion of the Day Date, but you dont know my all life circunstances. I live in South America, with lot of poors and middle class persons. Not all loves succesful people.
If someday you travel to Chile, you will know.
