The moment for upgrade your old Sub is when you'll think about upgrading your wife. Not before...

I quite honestly don’t get the sentiment value in OP’s case. Many things were worn the day OP met his wife. How about the cloths OP was wearing or money in the wallet? Were such things also kept since that day for sentimental reasons?

I can see many other sentimental reason where one would keep a watch as it was inherited or received as a gift, etc. But, not in this case.

OP, it’s a watch and if you and your wife are OK to replace it with a newer one, go for it.

The cons FAR outweigh the pros. The pros you listed IMO aren’t really pros. I would never sell my 14060M for any modern piece. Mine also has loads of sentimental value.

Add, don't sell in my opinion.

A good condition, full set 14060m will get increasingly more expensive and harder to find as time goes on whereas the 124060 will likely be in production for the next 7 to 10 years.

I would save up and get both.

I don't know why we tend to attribute so much sentimental value to watches, but not other objects. Did you also keep your clothes, your shoes, your car, from the day you met your wife? I mean, your wife has the sentimental value, not the 14060. And, I guess, if you go over to a sneakers forum, members there will attribute all the same sentimental value to their shoes...

I would say keep for the shake of the watch itself.

Definitely keep it & put the $ towards service as you had mentioned above. If so send it over to Phillip Ridley, his work speaks volumes.

I’d never trade my two line 14060m unless I was in financial trouble and it would be the last one to go. To me it’s perfection apart from the bracelet, which is very comfortable but doesn’t ooze quality! I should have bought mine 5 or 6 years ago but waited until 2019 and so had to pay quite a bit more. I’m glad I did tho because the prices have gone up even further since then and it would have hurt even more and I can’t see them getting any cheaper unless the bubble finally bursts.

The case size and look is close to vintage especially the two line and it has the 3130 movement with sapphire crystal, so to me it’s the best of both worlds.

IMO every submariner after the 5 digits are a bit too jewellery like for me, and while the bracelets are vastly superior I’m not a fan of the huge glidelock clasp, but each to their own.

He said he bought the watch the day he met his wife, not was just wearing it.

OP , I wouldn’t sell it, not in a million years, but that’s just me.

Keep it. Start a fund now for the next, which may be funded when when you get the call considering wait times.

Your 14060 also sounds like a good heirloom with a good story.

Sell it to me. Then when you feel a bit nostalgic in 3-5 years, I can sell it back to you 2x what I paid for.

Oh man the decision is clear to me, you should really keep that watch. You met your wife while wearing it, and that's fantastic. If you have children, or have them now, you pass that watch down to them with just that story, and it will mean more to them than all the money that they could inherit, or a more expensive watch that was an upgrade along the way. I have an old Porsche that I took on a first date, 7/5/2000, with the most amazing woman in the world, and I'd sell my house and my other cars, literally everything else I own before I would let go of that car.

No way I would sell it after hearing your story OP! Maybe it's time to add something in addition to it if funds allow? DJ41? OP41? I think those would make great compliments to a Sub!

FWIW, I sold the watch I was wearing when I met my wife (was also my first mechanical). Surprise dental bill immediately following moving + new jobs with huge pay cuts. Wasn’t a good time, and we needed the cash. I didn’t immediately regret it. However, as years went on, and pictures kept popping up of us and that watch, I began to regret it.

I repurchased it last week.

Same goes for the watch I wore to our wedding. Repurchased that one, too.

Don’t sell your watch.

I swapped a two line 14060m for an brand new 114060 in 2015. Always regretted it have since traded it for a 16613. But still wish i kept the old 14060m. Theres no character to the new watches to clinical. Keep the old one

Lately, I've been toying with the idea of parting with it and using the funds + not much additional added to buy a new 124060.

Pros
- Values are at an all-time high.
- New watch, warranty.
- 41mm vs 40mm case

Cons
- The watch has sentimental value. I met my wife the day I bought it.
- It is in very good shape and keeps very good time for a 2001 watch.
- Potential wait at an AD for a 124060

It really comes down to a sentimental value vs. upgrade argument. I don't know how long this appreciated value is going to last.

Before anyone asks, I haven't explored actual/forecasted wait times for the 124060. I've been given a very favorable introduction to an AD that a group of friends uses and have bought about 20 watches from in the last 5-7 years. I've only expressed general interest to them. Haven't worked out the brass tacks yet.

Decisions, decisions.
I wouldn't sell the watch if you bought it the same day you met her. Just my humble opinion. :D

I bought one to celebrate finishing my post-grad - I would never part with it.

I have a feeling if you did sell it, and the buzz of the new watch wears off, that you'd regret it.

I would prefer a 14060 over a 124060.

Add in the sentimentality part and this is a no-brainer - keep what you have.

On this note, with the children, when we do have "them" (planning 2, maybe 3), I'll probably need more than one watch to pass down then.

Pass the wife's OP31 to a daughter.
Pass my 14060M to a son.
Get something else down the line to add to the collection to pass to another son/daughter.

I think after reading the consensus on this post, I'll keep it. Send it out for a good service and sprucing up.

I didn't realize how revered the 14060M is compared to the newer models. I do also like the fact it's a 2-line, minimalist Sub.

Really, my only reasons for upgrading would be better lume, larger case and that's about it.
