My first Rolex was a YM 16622. I still love this watch, classy, sporty and elegant all at the same time.

Some great photos on this thread - the rhodium dial with light blue details is stunning. If they could just do something to tone down that bezel!

I take it back what I previously said about photographs not capturing how nice this watch is. Great photos of a great looking watch.

Like clockwork, the ubiquitous "why doesn't the Yachtmaster get more love?" thread...

goose_104 you inspired me to dig through my pics and find more shots

here's my personal reason for having this much love for this watch (this is of course subjective since everyone's taste is dif )

Here's why I feel this is pretty much the perfect piece for me:

I feel the weight is pretty much spot on, hefty enough so it feels sturdy and high quality, but not too heavy to cause fatigue.
The weight of the case and bracelet are very well balanced.

The way the case marries the bracelet is very seamless compared to many other sports models. It tapers down soo well and hugs the wrist perfectly.

It's extremely versatile, it's sporty enough to wear with shorts on the beach, but at the same time it's elegant enough to work with a very elegant attire.

That rhodium dial is the most beautiful dial I have ever seen on any watch in person - when you take it in the sun, it's insanity, the color shifts and changes depending on the angle the light hits it.

It's actually dangerous to wear this while driving - almost got into a minor fender-bender because I couldn't stop looking at it.

The polished elements are just the right balanced amount for it not to be too flashy, but not boring either.

The shade of that blue writing and seconds hand go so well with the color of the bezel and the dial shade.

Anyways I could go on and on, but yeah

I have no love for the YM. The YM came out in 1992 and feels like a strange overpriced mash-up of other more established watches and more of a marketing gimmick than anything else. Rolex markets it as the "watch of the open seas". But what does it actually do better than the Sub, Explorer, or GMT all of which are icons, are less expensive, and pre-date the YM by decades? Answer: nothing.

I personally love the yachtmaster models on oysterflex. But for some reason cannot seem to like the ones on the bracelet

It feels better on the wrist. Have you tried one on? Just say you don’t like it which is fine.

Same here! When I bought mine in in 2021 I was able to try on the slate dial, blue dial and both the black dial and chocolate dials in the TT and the Chocolate dial blew me away....

I mean, that's a fair take and probably why the YM is easier to come by at AD's and priced closer to retail in the secondary market than the models you referenced.

Where I would respectfully disagree is that I think the YM actually does a better job of appearing more rich and luxurious or even "fancy" than the models you listed, particularly when offered on an oyster bracelet. I think it packs more wrist presence to the uninitiated than a lot of other SS pieces.

Again, though. I understand what you are saying. I'd love to have the rhodium slate dial YM, but I doubt it will rise to the number one coveted spot, and I just don't have the economic capability to make it that deep down on my want list.

What if it came with a black ceramic bezel, would you like it more?

No, not mine, but thinking about it. Put the platinum bezel away and put on a ceramic. I’m a bit rough on watches. Besides I am guessing an easy swap when I decide to go back to original. Now to locate a ceramic bezel that will work?

All about keeping it OEM, would need to be from a 116655/126655 (40mm ever rose OF YM) which is the biggest road block here unfortunately. Should be an easy swap, but I'm scared to know what it might cost to get my hands on one

An ever rose bezel would not work for me.

The YM wears better, looks better and is less boring than the black Sub. Case design and finishing are on another level.

That's exactly what I was going to say

But, taste is very subjective, so it would be nonsensical to turn this into a conv of which is better - ultimately it depends on the individual and what that particular person is looking for.

Well for one thing, it's far less common than those other watches. To each their own, but some might feel that the submariner is so ubiquitous that its a turn off to them.

I have a tiny wrist as a man (6.2"), when I try on YM 40mm it's too beefy, when I try on 37mm it's too feminine
Somehow GMT in 40mm seems right, not sure why. So no love for YM from me.

The YM is smaller than the GMT. The GMT is probably also too big for you but you see what you want to see.
